KARACHI: Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Parliamentary leader of the MQM Dr Farooq Sattar said Awami National Party (ANP) put up a proposal to change the name of Pakistan, which the MQM has supported.

He said the ANP gave this proposals to the Committee for Constitutional Reforms that Pakistan’s name be changed from Islamic Republic of Pakistan to People’s Republic of Pakistan.

Farooq Sattar also hoped that the Committee on Constitutional Reforms will give good news at the commencement of new year.

He said the proposal was tabled that Gilgit-Baltistan should be given a status of fifth province and it should have representation in NFC Award.

ANP proposes change in country’s name

Islamabad, Nov.19 (ANI): Pakistan’s Awami National Party (ANP) has proposed to change the country’s name from the ‘Islamic Republic of Pakistan’ to the ‘People’s Republic of Pakistan’.

According to a private television channel, the ANP proposed the change in the country’s name during a meeting of the Parliamentary Reforms Committee, which was supported by both the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM).

“The MQM along with PPP members of the committee supported the idea of renaming Islamic Republic of Pakistan as Peoples Republic of Pakistan,” The Nation quoted MQM Deputy Convener Dr. Farooq Sattar, as saying.

However, ANP leader Haji Adeel denied having proposed the name change.

Interacting with media persons, Dr. Sattar also asked the government to give Gilgit-Baltistan the status of a province.

“The government should take appropriate steps in this regard to remove the constitutional and international hurdles,” he said.

^^ Any confirmation from MQM and ANP leaders that they did infact propose this? It looks like a spear campaign. I wouldn't be surprised if PPP is also dragged into this while the blame will most likely come from parties that have been traditionally close the military establishment

I am sorry but can you explain what would India gain from changing Pakistan's name and how would it hamper its progress?

People's republic of Pakistan resonates with another brotherly country in region (Hint: It's not India).

Well that's probably the biggest myth circulating Karachi these days. The growth can be credited to Musharraf's era pro-economic reform policies, not MQM's divine work.


If you do an honest assessment of the MQM's involvement in destabilization of Karachi since 1990s till now, and take all of the good works they proclaim to have done and subtract it by destablization, lootings, fraud, criminal killings, and all:

good work - destablization of all sorts = you'd still end up in the negative

We have such pathetic attitude.If we don't accept with someone else we call them Agent of India, Israel or US or Kafir.It's a ******* democratic country..they are trying to change Pakistan's name in a democratic manner so whats wrong.If you dont like it then obviously they cant do it if they don't have enough public support. and whats wrong with People's Republic of Pakistan..its not like ANP is trying to change Pakistan name into People's Republic of Pathans or INdia that you people are so worried.Afterall Pakistan was Republic of Pakistan before 1956.As long as it is done in democratic manner its fine.They are not blowing buildings and doing suicide bombings like taliban to change our country name.This is the exact difference between animals like talibans and normal humans.In a democratic country you need to learn to listen to others opinion even if you disagree with them.
