Only if we feed him he will keep on growing ! see, now he is having a
vacation !

Why a mars mission ?? What purpose does it serve and what cutting edge technology that India would provide that has not been provided by the US ?

Talking of US, its a developed nation. Half of its population does not go to bed on an empty stomach. 50% does not live on $2 a day. It does not have a 40% illiterate population.

First mission should be try to eliminate poverty. The hopelessly poor, the homeless and the sickly are not amused by a bunch of stuck up English speaking, college educated elites who dream of showing off India's capabilities while at the same time , dusting the real problem under the carpet !

Even if India has excess money, a better use would be to shore up its defense capabilities. Ensure that its foot soldiers get the best clothes in winter and are suitabily rewarded for putting their lives on risk !

Its not possible. There will be 20% poverty in India at any given time.
-----------
And if we manage to remove poverty that means we will be superpower and we have to invade lot of countries to meet our demands i.e. water, food, etc.

Poverty rate in the US is 13% as of 2007 probably more than 15% now...so yes it is not reasonable to expect poverty to go away from India.Around 20% should be the goal.

Your second para is worthless..sorry.

that is a good news for india and indian space technology department as well. i sincerely hope it goes according to the plan.

i have a question, may be some senior indian member can answer it, why india is going after mars mission instead of going for space station. i mean india has sent an unmanned lunar mission and entered the space and i guess building a space station is more beneficial and relatively easier than mars mission, isnt it?

Regards

sincerely

Yup that wud be in the vision down the lane.... but it wud be costly to build and then maintain with the funds and technology ISRO has currently.....
These things come gradually as ISRO keeps up the progress

Man people like u really amuse me...
Do u guys rreally think that gif these funds are diverted to welfare of people things wud chage ?
may be for a couple of leaders and a few people...
These kinds of scientific innovations need to progress to ancourage human capital and develop technologies which have applications from military to civilian use...

Coomon guys nothing here is MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.. u can't give reasons that since a sizable population is poor u can't bark technology tree, We need to concentrate on both..else u will be left where u were a decade back... Back in 1980s when India for the first time under Rajiv Gandhi tried to encourage Computer Science and Related jobs, many of the so called socialists and people's friends criticized it by arguing that when more than 50% of people and poor and a large % is unemployedwhy do we want to get into this Information Technology which will replace human labor !!! Funny it sounds but that was the reason many so called expert argued... U know what happened...in 2 decades, the same industry has grown to $65 Billion with direct employment generation to more than 3-4 million Indians.
A country needs to develop technology and develop thats the only way..which motivates young generation to follow the path. to all those who question what India will gain otehr than what US has already explored !! why do soo many countries manufacture Cars when there r soo many cars and models in this world ? Thats the power of innovation, unless a civilization does that there is not development of intellectual quotient.

Mr Madhavan Nair, ISRO Chief Said in Colloquial Malayalam(Indian Language) slang 2 days back on a Malayalam Channel answering the news presenters question if Chandrayan is a failure. "Only a Fool would say Chandrayan is a Failure". I echo it!

India is Proud of these people, and expect nothing short of greatness in the Mars Mission!

Very good statements.

The reason is simply: in a democratic society, the government needs to fan up nationalism to fool the vast poor and to legitimize their power. Thus interest groups behind the government can fatten their own bank account, not those of the poor.

It is more so in poorer countries, where vast population can’t read, has less unbiased information, is occupied with daily necessities, and with less capability of judgment.

If GOI does according to you, the rich behind wouldn't let it stand a chance.

there is nothing nationlaistic...

$100 million = 500 crore.. 500/110 cr = 5 rs per person .

do you think by spending Rs 5 per person you can change india's poverty overninght

well guys its all about He 3 .. in future when you want to exploit the resources of moon or mars , India will have equal rights

... hmm I will tell your history
you guys needs to first understand that half of this world incuding US was discoverd when your forefathers wanted to know where my forefather's were... :)
i.e. when they started searching for great county INDIA. where there were no poverty ..

thanks to your forefathers that 70% are poor now.. ok that's a diffrent story .

Think about going to USA today .. any one comming to usa or AUs , south africa are non resident alien ... the great USA was found when columbus wanted to find india but found usa.. but those settled drove away everyone and calling us alien

Now same applies here too .. it may be moon or mars or even pluto ... no one should make 1/5 th of humanity as Alien ...

Both india and china has to do all it can to explore all planets

Now Thats the spirit, India had launched its first Rocket in 1963, It was the first baby step. That rocket was so small that it was brought in Bycycle. India is truly living on the dream of vikram sarabhai who wanted india to explore space... ISRO is great....:smitten:

ISRO's first ever rocket.....I allways get goosebumb when i see this nostalgic and historic picuture. I bet no space agency can claim a humble begining than this. Now we have this.......

Unfortunately, the rest of the world won't wait for us to eradicate poverty before they decide to develop cutting edge technologies, therefore we have to focus on both aspects at the same time.

Poverty cannot be eradicated in a day, you can't throw money at the problem and hope that it disappears. Its a process. what makes you think the US will share their technological expertise with us anyway?

Eliminating poverty is high on our priority list, but its not the only thing we have to worry about.

Believe it or not we too have a genuine interest in scientific endeavors and space exploration, when space travel becomes as trivial as commercial flights, we would like to remain in the loop. Basically it is a strategic imperative.

Millions of dollars and years hard work are not being put in to inflate the ego of some 'stuck up, English speaking, college educated Indian'.

Since you're such a smart guy, maybe you can find some time to read and learn, so next time you won't go off shooting your mouth without understanding the situation.

i think by joining in the international space programme india can do research and experiments in the space which can be much more beneficial in future for them. sending a unmanned mission to mars has some research benefits but limited. so i think india should opt for space station programme. off course, money is important but it is included in both the cases and may be equal in amount (initial costs).

anyhow, i think IRSO has done a great job by sending that unmanned lunar mission and their aims are also high, i hope they can achieve this goal in time.

what kind of mission it is?circling the mars or landing on it?How much thrust is that rocket?can anyone share these details ? thanks

PANAJI: India's mission to Mars will take place between 2013-2015, Indian Space Research Organisation chief G Madhavan Nair said on Monday.

"We have given a call for proposal to different scientific communities. Depending on the type of experiments they propose, we will be able to plan the mission," he said.

The mission is at conceptual stage and will be taken up after Chandrayaan-2, Nair said.

"Once in two years you get an opportunity for the mission," Nair said.

ISRO Chairman is in Goa to host the eighth international conference on low cost planetary missions.

He said that like Chandrayaan-1, which had cost less than 100 million dollars, the mission on Mars will also be low cost space odyssey.

On Saturday, ISRO's scientists and engineers, who had slogged over the country’s first moon mission Chandrayaan-1 had lost radio contact with the spacecraft orbiting about 200 km above the moon's surface.

Data from Chandrayaan-1's last orbit was transmitted until 12.25am on Saturday to the Indian Deep Space Network at Byalalu near Bangalore.

Though Chandrayaan-1 was slated to be a two-year mission, ISRO chairman Madhavan Nair had said that nearly 95% of Chandrayaan's scientific goals had already been accomplished in less than a year.

Mars mission by 2013-2015, says ISRO - India - NEWS - The Times of India

Looking over this again, it seems plausible since it didn't mention it being a man-mission nor a soft-landing. :victory: Prove the world wrong, that you have the capabilities!

Just to let you know that during India's first moon launch, I was HAPPY and cheering for you guys. I still am. I remember they interviewed a bunch of Europeans in various cities to see their opinion of the launch --- and you can sense the sense of bitterness-envy-hatred they had for Indians. I was personally upset about it. For me I am glad that another non-white race/ethnic group succeeded. :agree: So don't think I was making fun of you guys when I used the $10 laptop. Do you guys know the entire slashdot community (which is basically the IT-computer nerds in USA and elsewhere) all ridiculed you guys?! If you make outrageous claims, they will use it against you to ridicule you. :sniper:

Well, good luck! :yahoo:
