JF-17 Block-3 -- Updates, News & Discussion

The auxiliary intake near the vertical tail is for an APU (Auxiliary power unit) it seems.
Essentially, the block 3 is designed to counter the Rafale. It does so first and foremost from a bvr scenario with the pl15 and a powerful radar that may largely be an equivalent one as on the Rafale.
Secondly it does so with an integrated ew system that utilizes the AESA radar as an added EW system. For both this radar and the ew suit more power is needed thus the APU.
For the added weight of all this, more power and some strengthening was needed.
The new 3 axis FBL or FBO is an added boon. It helps lower weight and saves space, additionally providing better handling.

The only advantage the Rafale will have over the B3 is better maneuverability above 20k feet and bvr combat may in fact take place most commonly at 35k feet.

it was a bit confusing about radar will it have AESA radar and can SD 10 be now mounted on wingtip?

Unlikely, but with pl-15s, the sd-10A still remains an excellent option.

IMHO, the pl-15 is the true game changer. The extended range courtesy the dual pulse rocket motor allowing the missile to achieve up to mach 5, the active/passive AESA seeker are features that the much hyped (by Indians of as they always do) Meteor lack.

You think the kinetic acceleration of the SD-10 was amazing? Wait for pl-15

did you read the links @LKJ86 posted they had some very interesting information

Isn't the PL-15 suited more to dealing with long range slow-moving targets like AWACS and tankers?

Not Sure what it means

The first batch of three dragons flew for the first time. Seeing stitches and adding "plug-ins", the potential will be tapped to the limit!

Original: Big Water Comes 昨天
Since ancient times, how big to buy a house has been the biggest headache for working families. Buying a small house is not convenient to live in. It is troublesome to have a relative and add a few more babies. But buying a house that is big enough and the wallet is not fat enough. Too much repayment is too much pressure. This is the normal state of the world. This dilemma also exists in the military circle, and it is more difficult to handle.

The simplest question is: how appropriate is the fighter, how much space does the fighter have, can accommodate more fuel, and more equipment has better performance, but the space is too large, the weight of the aircraft is very large, and the resistance has skyrocketed. Optimizing technology also cannot avoid this trend, and the cost is proportional to the weight. The heavier the weight, the more expensive the aircraft, and the more difficult it is for the customer. Recently, the third batch of Chinese fighter dragons flew for the first time. We also saw this dilemma: The house is too small to have more babies.

The first flight of the Biaolong 3 fighters was successful, but we saw a different place, thanks to the photographer!

For the third batch of fighters, this may be the ultimate improvement of the fighters. The designer has almost exhausted all the potential of the aircraft. In short, all the original reserved space is fully utilized, and the position is reopened. To increase space.

Let ’s take a look at the improvements in the third batch of Chenlong. The news from Pakistan is that the single-axis telex flight control is upgraded to a three-axis telex flight control, a more advanced phased array radar is used, and the J- The helmet targeting display system on the 20 fighter aircraft will be equipped with the foreign trade versions of the Chinese Thunderbolt-10 and Thunderbolt-15 missiles. The introduction we received from the chief designer is not the same. It strengthens information and improves combat capabilities. From the appearance we see Obtained a large aurora EHUD-2 large-scale diffraction head.

In order to attract the Pakistani Air Force and overseas customers, all three advanced technologies that can be exported domestically have been installed in the Nine Dragons.

The Xiaolong three batches of fighters also use more advanced electronic countermeasures systems. The fuselage wings have exposed missile warning systems. A variety of requirements are combined, which immediately puts great pressure on small-sized fighters and increases aircraft avionics. Too much weight, and the heavier Perak-10 missiles to be mounted on the wing tip, the wing needs to be strengthened, the aircraft is heavier, and the wing needs to have a larger angle of attack to produce a lift to counteract. The larger the lift, the greater the lift Resistance, the flight range of the aircraft inevitably decreases, what should I do?

It is obviously impossible to modify the wing, and the difficulty is too great. The ultimate solution is to open source and tap the potential. The designer added fuel tanks to the wing strips, and even increased the back space to install the auxiliary fuel tank, which may also include vertical tail stabilizers. Fuel was also installed. After doing so, the remaining space of the Xiaolong fighter aircraft was almost zero, and it was difficult to install more equipment.

If you look at the height of the spine and the relative position of the fairing at the root of the tail, you can see that the spine has increased in three batches.

The ridge height of the three batches is larger than that of the previous batches of 1 and 2 aircraft, and more fuel tanks and equipment can be installed. Moreover, it can be seen from the forward part of the root of the vertical tail that it is likely to be an air vent. High-powered electronic equipment needs to be cooled, which is also an evidence that the Dragon Fighter has pinpointed.

And from the green paint area of the fuselage, it can be seen that this part coincides with the height of the fuselage fuel tank position, the inside of the wing (the outside structure height is too small, the volume is limited, and the deformation is too large and frequent, making sealing difficult). The inside of the bar, the middle body, this part is likely to use new materials to reduce weight.

Ventilation holes are added at the root of the vertical tail, and there is an internal electronic device to dissipate heat

From the design point of view, loading oil in the internal space is the best choice, which does not bring more resistance. Other methods to increase the amount of oil often increase the resistance. The design with the smallest increase in resistance is to increase the fuel on the back of the aircraft and rely on the nose cockpit. Obstacles rarely increase the maximum windward area, but this design also has problems, which can easily have an adverse effect on the area ratio of the aircraft and slightly weaken the high-speed performance. This design has appeared on many fighters, including MiG-29 , And F-16 fighter jets.

The Xiaolong fighter started from a light fighter that replaced the F-5 and MiG-21 fighters. After more than 20 years of development, it has now become a third-generation and half-fighter with mid-to-high-end combat capabilities. The aircraft is in aerodynamic layout and flight control technology. Avionics equipment and airborne weapons have reached world-class levels. Before the test flight, the Pakistani Air Force placed an order for 28 aircrafts. With the first and second batches, the total number will reach 250 or more.

The test flight did not start, and the customer placed an order early and made a good reception plan. What is the treatment? Chengfei surprises customers again and again, so customers can be so trusted!

Pl-15 is more of a comprehensive upgrade over pl-12/sd-10.

The VLRAAM with its extended range, air launched lofted trajectory capability, will engage strategic targets like AARs/ AWACS.

Is their a test video available?

Is their a test video available?

Should be.

Quoting @messiach from October 2019,

"CFT are used on as required basis. Yes block3 wings, LERX and posteior fuselage has been re-worked from scratch. Increased payload and fuel capacity. It will harbor a posterior spine similar to B eventually."

By lofted trajectory you mean a top down attack like the AIM-54 Phoenix?

uhm, waat mean AARs?

Nice. I wonder when PL-21 becomes available possible our fighters be able to carry it, that should be compared me Meteor — if according to Messiach the wings been strengthened or possible reinforced for more PL-15.

Hope we see some images soon. :)
