Italian envoy cannot leave India

I want to get a better understand of the India's justice system.

Were those 2 Italian marines indicted? If not, why not?

If they were indicted, why does it take the Indian so long (12 months) to hold them without a trial?

Do you think it is fair to hold somebody for so long without a trial?

Facts straight before accusing India of Racism. Don't pull allegations out of you @$$ .....there is nothing racist about Indian anger and demand for justice.

What's with the attitude? It is you who made the unsubstantiated allegation that Indian fishermen are at fault by crossing into the sovereign waters of other nations. Kindly back it up with the required proof. My position has been adequately clarified in my previous post to Developer.

There are other such under trials languishing in jails, cases are backlogged.
This is India, a third world country.

Number of Indians in foreign jails = 6293. Number of foreigners in Indian jails = 5621. But neither side gets #ItalianMarines "treatment" :(

Now only answer is to put the italian liar amassador's a$$ under house arrest as long as the marines are not returned.this will show india's resolve.

India downgrades ties with Italy, won't send Ambassador

New Delhi: Angered by Italy reneging on its commitment to send back its two marines, India is downgrading its diplomatic ties with it which means there will be no Ambassador-level representation between the two countries.

India's Ambassador-designate Basant Kumar Gupta was asked not to proceed to Rome as a review of entire gamut of ties with Italy was underway by the government.

Government sources said, "The decision of not sending Mr Gupta to assume his position is tantamount to the fact that India wants to keep diplomatic ties with Italy at a level lesser than the Ambassador."

Gupta being asked not to proceed to Rome creates an unusual situation for Italian Ambassador Daniele Mancini who would in the normal course be asked to leave but his case is before the Supreme Court which has restrained him from leaving India without its permission.

The apex court passed the order after it was brought to its notice that the Republic of Italy has reneged on its assurance given through its Ambassador to the Supreme Court. Mancini has been asked by the Court to respond by Monday.

Therefore, the government may inform the apex court about downgrading of diplomatic ties and depending on the court's view, it may decide about Mancini accordingly.

Meanwhile, all the exit points, including airports across the country have been alerted to prevent the Italian Ambassador from leaving the country. The decision was taken by the Union Home Ministry, official sources said.

Yesterday, the government had also announced decision to initiate review of entire gamut of relations with Italy which includes diplomatic, trade and defence ties apart from reaching out to European Union, which was briefed on India's views and position in the matter.

Official spokesman in the Ministry of External Affairs had said the "entire expanse of our interaction" with Italy was being reviewed while stressing that Italy has to "respect and abide" by the agreements between it and the Supreme Court.

The two marines --Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Girone--facing trial for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen last year, were permitted by the apex court on February 22 to go to Italy for four weeks for voting in election and directed to return within four weeks.

The world yawn and don't care a bit. Indians, get used to it and move on.

suppose Supreme court issues arrest warrant for italain ambassador formisleading court and helping marines run away. what can italians do. we will be satisfied then. if not marines then their ambasador at least. if indian can show middle finger to whole world and not sign NPT n then explode nukes what do you think india will care what world thinks.

indian probably is not sending its ambassador for tit for tat reaction by italy. lets wait and watch

I have a question for all you Indians:

As of now, what exactly has the two marines been charged with? It has been over a year since the shooting, and I am still to hear any formal charges brought forward against these two men.

^ they could have got away for lack of proof. but now they will not if they come back to india.

italian envoy has shoot himself in foot by being part of the case. he opened himself to jurisdiction of supreme court. cant claim diplomatic immunity now. violation of supreme court orders is serious issue
