IAF modernisation plan: Saab offers Gripen fighter jets under 'Make in India' with full control

:D
That is a comparision of Gripen C/D so it is totally irrelevant.
The Gripen E/F addresses a lot of the shortcomings of the previous versions.
The main reason that Gripen E/F was not considered by India was that it was not available
for immediate delivery.
It is likely to be in production for several years before India actually orders something :D.

Tejas MK-1 is not at all comparable to Gripen E, so cost differences are irrelevant.

The new Gripen AESA radar should be superior to the one of the Rafale,
simply by the fact it is developed later than the Rafale AESA radar.
Its wide angle of detection gives interesting new capabilities in combat.

"One of the major characteristics of Raven, already present in Vixen 1000ES, is a rotating platform that allows the radar antenna to cover a scanning angle of +/- 105°. This enables the Gripen NG to move away form the target, rapidly making a curve after launching the missile, while still keeping the target in sight; with this, a terminal active phase short duration missile (i.e., after finding the target with its internal systems) can undergo trajectory corrections sent by the Gripen NG."

Other radars support maybe 60°, so they have to fly towards the incoming missile.

As for handling temperatures, obviously Gripen can handle cold temperatures,
and South Africa is about as hot as any Asian country. So is Brazil.

Stuff like this is designed according to mil specs which covers much warmer temperatures.
Still, I remember an interview with a Luftwaffe pilot which said that when it is cold,
they need to fly Phantoms, and not Eurofighter.

Obviously SAAB stirs the Hornet's nest (without Hornets) by such a bid,but that is their job. Does not cost much to make such an offer compared to the possible returns.

If there is anyone that should be desperate, its the IAF...
When will the Vixen 1000ES be on the Gripen? 2018? The Rafale's RBE2 has been in sevice for more than 2 years now.

Whilst it is true the Vixen has a greater number of T/R modules than the RBE2 it is rather marginel and sensor power is not everything. The raw processing power onboard the Rafale coupled with its world-beating sensor fusion makes the Rafale the far superior package. The radar is just one sensor, in every other area the Rafale easily outclasses the Gripen NG.

@Taygibay You are the best person to talk bcz i do remember back in 2011 you were first to open a thread about RBE2 in a different forum (key i think)

I just can't post anything serious on tech in here, @FrenchPilot !
Just check the thread's OP :
the umpteenth article on an umpteenth attempt by an MMRCA contender that did not make the grade,
and actually a few by the L2 guys but somewhat more discreet, to crawl back in.

Oh! Sure, MMRCA is now defunct so they think they have a fair chance but at what exactly?
What opportunity is there in India in general at present and for SAAB in particular?

Honestly, none unless Delhi abdicates in trying to develop an aeronautical industry, at least public sector!
I'm sorry but the Gripen is nowhere near the Rafale. In some countries, it may be the right choice though
but certainly not in India and guess why? LCA anyone?

India wants a 3-tier AF to replace its multitude of specialized platforms jumble mumble.
Top in weight class, cause for multirole ACs it is the main differentiator : SU_30 MKI.
Middle : Rafale. Light : LightCA TEJAS of flocking course! That's it for IAF! Enough!

Where would a mythical flying lion fit? The Tejas with all its bugs and flaws can be made to work, can't it?
And it is more than enough to replace the MiG-21s, agreed? Hire a consultant as overseer to force HAL
to make it an exemplary production line, equip the IAF and be done with. Light tier = Tejas.
Gripen does not equal Rafale as a basic understanding of technical stats sheets or Swiss eval results shows.
Middle tier = Rafale
And I want a copy of that probable article where some journo cites an ex-CoAS thinking out loud that a deal
for 300 Gripen as replacement for the Sukhois would make sense, because you know it will come. This will
only make sense in crazed news land and trolls' heads though. Top tier is Su-30MKI.

Replacing LCA by Gripen kills the Indian efforts of the past 30 years.
Replacing Rafale by Gripen saves money but ... undermines TEJAS and reduces capacity.
Replacing MKIs is ludicrous.

If you had naval consideration, you have to wait for the feasible Brazilian adaptation of the Gripen.
Wanna bet it takes as long as the NLCA?
And if you add future considerations, how will the Gripen profit for or from FGFA or AMCA? Stealth?

This plane, although very good in its own right, has no place in India by virtue of its positioning in
the spread of offers found in mil jets today. The only reason why it is still crawling like a beggar to
keep its unfounded hopes alive is IMHoO because of the worst trait of Indian negotiators and poli-
ticians : letting contenders grovel past selection which is likely a result of how many different babus,
committees, agencies and so on are involved in the process, each defending their favourite to the end.
Too many cooks spoil the sauce and in the end, who runs two preys at once often catches none.

Seriously, be it after boot camp in the armed forces or training camp in a pro sports team, could you
picture the guy going to court or protesting his non-selection for flocking years?
You didn't make the cut, buddy! Go home, pick up macrame or gardening and carry on with your life?

Sorry mate, we'll chat Gripounet on the appropriate thread anytime you want though, :police: Tay.

P.S. @PARIKRAMA You read above but in a nutshell,
give it a year to get flights and us infos but it should be near or on par
depending on technical choices and programming.

@FrenchPilot @PARIKRAMA

Never, Gripen will use the Raven 05-ES.
The "expert" don't know which equipment a plane has,
but can pass judgement on how it compares to others :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:.

The BIG advantage of the Raven 05-ES is that it is not fixed, unlike the Rafale AESA Radar,
so the Rafale has much less flexibility in movement during the most critical moments
of a fight. the Rafale must fly towards the enemy missile, while the Gripen can fly away
so given the same missile specs the Rafale will ALWAYS be hit first.

And why would the sensor fusion be better than that of the Gripen NG?

As for why later is better, would you prefer an iPad 1 over an iPad Air 2?
Five years of difference in development of Electronics...
