Pakistan was next target after Afghanistan
This was a popular narrative back then to justify so-called Jihad in Afghanistan (CIA-led of-course) but it lacks credibility.

USSR was not doing well in economic terms during 1980s and 'occupation of other states' was not a sound policy to address its economic woes. Secondly, Soviet intervention in Afghanistan was more to do with preventing the collapse of communist forces in the country then to project power into neighboring states. Read the book titled "My Life with the Taliban" from Abdul Salam Zaeef to understand the state of affairs in Afghanistan prior to Soviet invasion.

And if warm waters was the ultimate objective then why through Pakistan? Why not through Iran? Think about it.

Now the Soviet Union is gone.

Yes. The truth was the Russians didn't want to get involved, they came to stop their allies from collapsing. The Russians wanted to slow down the level of 'socialism', the Afghan Communist wanted to accelerate it. In reality there was no threat to Pakistan, nor was it a drive to the sea.

Oh yes, Zia. Greatest leader Pakistan ever had.

Strange isn't it even after all the destruction that he's responsible for people are showing love to him!
awesome slogan :lol::tup:

he was mard-e-momin for many here :P
i remember watching a Major Amir Interview with Shahid masood, in which he claims that he told Zia about his assasination plot many month before his crash, and since than he took American Ambassador to every where even bathroom hahaha so much for mard-e-momin

Now the Soviet Union is gone.
Bro,

It is has little to do with Afghanistan.

My contention is that while Zia regime intervened in Afghanistan to push Soviets back, it had no "EXIT STRATEGY" for this conflict and this came back to haunt us after 9/11. Though you may say in defense that Zia-ul-Haq was assassinated before he could do much. However, we can only speculate about Zia's plans for Pakistan in the aftermath of Soviet-Afghan War. I hear that he decided to redeploy Mujahideen to Kashmir.

whatever they come there for , It wasn't the Russian that blow 70K+ Pakistani to bits and pieces , it was the Seed of Zia ul Na-Haq , that we reap and sow .. Today they Extremist and Terrorism you see is directly and indirectly connected to Zia , I am glad that he died in Plane crash , and i won't be surprised if he was eliminated by our Agencies , he was more of a threat to Pakistan existence than India , Soviets or Americans

The guy is dead. Just show some class and move on.

The blowback came to haunt everyone. The Pakistanis, the Americans, the Saudis and the West. But your country was facing an existential threat. The soviets wanted the warm waters of the Arabian Sea. Pakistan was the next logical target and at best would have been sandwiched between India and Soviet Union. Zia was a bold man, accelerated the nuclear program, modernized his military and called soviet union's bluff and brought the evil empire to a close. Of course, it came with a price but as he said, freedom has no price. He was a bold strong man. Your country would have been much different if subsequent leaders were as bold as him.

There's a reason why there's a remnant of the Berlin Wall at the ISI HQ sent by the German intel chief that reads "TO THE ONE THAT STUCK THE FIRST BLOW"
