Austria’s far-right party wants to ‘ban’ Islam

The head of Austria's far-right Freedom Party called on Saturday for a total ban on “fascistic Islam.”

Heinz Christian Strache told an audience in Salzburg that he wanted to see a ban of Muslim symbols, something like the Austrian law that bans Nazi symbols. And he warned that Islam posed an existential threat to Europe. “Let us put an end to this policy of Islamization,” he said. “Otherwise we Austrians, we Europeans will come to an abrupt end.”

The Freedom Party is staunchly anti-immigrant. Stache said Saturday that “we need zero and minus immigration.” The country has received 130,000 claims for asylum since the summer of 2015. Most are former residents of Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.

There are about 600,000 Muslims in Austria, and they're facing a growing chorus of detractors. Recently, an Austrian cardinal (and a top candidate for pope in previous conclaves) asked in a speech: “Will there be an Islamic conquest of Europe? Many Muslims want that and say: Europe is at the end.” In December, a right-leaning Austrian trade union suggested that Muslims should be denied Christmas bonuses because “they are against all Christian traditions.”

This attitude has made it hard for young Muslims to feel accepted. One recent study of Muslim youth in Vienna found that many do not feel recognized as Austrians, which has increased the risk of radicalization. According to the survey, "85 percent of young people who are in contact with a youth worker have an immigration background,” and "27 percent of those teenagers who are Muslim show strong sympathy for jihadism, and violent and anti-Western thinking.”

The Freedom Party's anti-Muslim message has been well-received by a nearly a majority of Austria's electorate. Its presidential candidate Norbert Hofer was defeated in a runoff vote last month, but gained 47 percent support.

In the Netherlands, the Freedom Party is running on a platform of closing mosques and Islamic schools, banning the Koran and Muslim migrants. It also wants to prohibit women from wearing headscarves. The next election is March 2017, and the party is expected to pick up seats to become the most represented party in the Dutch parliament.

Parties like these are popping up everywhere in the Western world. They will become a matter for concern only when they start getting elected

Seems like Europe has a tendency of state sponsored oppression of minorities. Telling them to integrate without offering them freedom and acceptance is a fine recipe to force minorities to seek their own identity.

Austria:
68.9% Catholic
80.4%,Christian
5.4% Islamic/Muslim
13.5% unaffiliated

If 5.4% equals 600.000 people and all 130,000 claims for asylum were to be awarded, and all those where mulsim, then the percent Islamic could go up to about 6.6%.. Which is in between Belgium (5.4%) and France (7.5%) and very close to Switzerland (5.5%), Germany (5.8%) and the Netherlands (6%).

For EUROPE as a whole, it is 75.18 % Christian, 5.9% Muslim and 18.2% unaffiliated

I don't see what the problem is, therefor.

You mean the Europe of which the United Kingdom is a part, yes? And what do you base your claim of 'tendency of state sponsored oppression of minorities' on, exactly? Speaking for each country in Europe, I mean.

Yes, the Europe which the U.K. is park of. What I meant by state sponsored is by politicians demonizing and generalising certain ethnic and religious groups. The politicians who run the country per say. Therefore, "state sponsored". For example, the French ban on "Burkini" at the beaches. The outfit clearly shows the face, so it's not in any way a security threat. However, the state imposed a ban on it simply because it was developed for conservative people (see Muslims women) to enjoy the beach, a distinctively European past- time.

And what if EU became Muslim? what's the problem in it? The same problem occured in the past with christianity, when it was a new religion. But the main difference is that islam didn't killed thousand of ppl in europe for forced conversion, like christianity did. At that time christianity expension in europe was similar as ISIS today, mass killing and slavery for those who didn't want to convert. Europe should better learn her own history, they will maybe be a little more humble....

And those who think that christians didn't kill other christians in this past years in their own country, then tell me why nearly 500k ppl die as protestans...

Initially, you were talking about ' state sponsored oppression of minorities'. So, I asked you which minorities in which countries you were referring to, specifically, because what is/is not a minority varies greatly by country.

Now, you are talking about ' politicians demonizing and generalising certain ethnic and religious groups'. So, ' minorities' are ' certain ethnic and religious groups', without further specification of group size. Specifically, you mention only France and Muslim women. And you give as example the Burkini.

France has 7.5% Muslims, and they are ' not so much' a minority as they can be considered in e.g. many of France's neighbours (Spain 2.1%, Luxembourg 2.3%, Italy 3.7%, UK 4.4%, Belgium 5.4%, Switzerland 5.5%, and Germany 5.8%). Which has much to do with France's colonial past.
In 2008, the TeO ("Trajectories and origins") poll conducted jointly by INED and the French National Institute of Statistics estimated that, out of a total of about 67 million, some 5 million people (7.4%) were of Italian ancestry (the largest single immigrant community from a particular country), followed by 3 million to 6 million people of North African ancestry (4.4-8.9%), 2.5 million people of Sub-Saharan African origin (3.7%), and 200,000 people of Turkish ancestry (0.3%). There are over 500,000 ethnic Armenians in France (0.8%). There are also sizeable minorities of other European ethnic groups, namely Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, and Greek. So, in France, muslims are as much a minority as people from Italian ancestry are.
France remains a major destination for immigrants, accepting about 200,000 legal immigrants annually. In 2008, the INSEE estimated that the total number of foreign-born immigrants was around 5 million (8% of the population), while their French-born descendants numbered 6.5 million, or 11% of the population. Thus, nearly a fifth of the country's population (19%) were either first or second-generation immigrants, of which more than 5 million where of European origin and 4 million of Maghrebi (North-Western African) ancestry. This too reflects that immigrants and their descendents, whether of European or Maghrebi origin, are not at all small groups (although technically still minorities).
In 2004, the Institut Montaigne estimated that within Metropolitan France, 51 million people were White (85% of the population), 6 million were North African (10%), 2 million were Black (3.3%), and 1 million were Asian (1.7%). From the POV of racial lines, Blacks and Asians are more of a minority than Muslims or people from Italian descent.
In conclusion, France may not be the best example of 'minority oppression'
The burkini is worn, typically, by more progressive Muslim women, as the conservative ones either don't go to the beach or don't bath in the sea. So, that's not a good example either imho s it does not affect what I would think to be the majority of the minority in question (it doesn't affect the men, and it affects only the least conservative of women, which may well be a minority of Muslem women in France).

So, being more humble, that is what this is all about, isn't it? Fine, as a Western European (though not Christian), I will be more humble. Will y'all of the other persuasion now also start acting a bit more humble? E.g. by acknowledging your own roles in the big scheme of things (rather than blaming anything and everything on Europeans, Americans and/or Jews).

Their land their rule.... Whatever make their nation vulnerable shall be quarantined.....

Are you calling Islam a disease?
When are you going to quarantine the Muslims of India?

The wrld change and it's not like any scheme for mass imigration to convert or take the power by numbrs. muslims are around 6-7% of the UE ( as a continent, meaning balkans in and all) so around 30-40 Mill guys as muslims. So bf "muslims take over UE, you have to wait hundreds and hundreds of years even if you get mass immigration like the syrian wave. even at 1Mil imigrant per year you will need 500years... . And those saying there is no christians in muslim country, well lebanon is 50% christian , egypt 10% christians, Even saudi have a christian minority... .

in conclusion even if it's a all mighty scheme from few guys in the desert... you can be at peace for at least 500 years...

Ethnic, race and religious statistics are banned under French law, making it difficult to estimate or numbers the percentage of muslim population or the immigrant one. We would never know the real numbers until official and national statistics are established, which probably will never happen. Until then we can only speculate and not sure polls or surveys based on thousands of persons are near the reality. A recent study estimated the percentage of muslims in France at 5,6% of the population, but of course we could never know the real figures.

@General General About the burkini,a handful numbers of communes banned it temporarily during the summer time to avoid general troubles (Like in Corsica) and for other reasons,on their communal territory. There is no national laws against it,nor current plans to make a law.

On another subject before someone talks about it ;

France is banning the full face covering targeting among others the Burqa and the Niqab, but a girl walking in the street with a hijab, even a jilbab will not be harassed or arrested among the horrors and innacurate BS I've read on PDF.

Yes with hijab she will not be arrested, but harassed is another thing, bc she does get harassed.

No, not at all... But that's their choice to ban it or let it flourish like other religions. That's purely their prerogative.....

You used the word quarantine. Diseased people are quarantined. Is your English that bad? Anyway, this is about Austria, in Europe and Islam, You have nothing to do with this. However, you have 200 million Muslims in India. Quarantine them.

No it's not. but if they want to do so, then France and other country has to strip down their "free/equal"fraternity" thing and rip off their 1789 declaration
