An Afghan woman who supported underground schools at a time when the Taliban banned education for girls, was awarded the fifth annual WISE prize on Wednesday for taking education to marginalised communities.

Sakeena Yacoobi founded the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) in 1995, providing schooling and healthcare in Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan as well as setting up the secret home schools, which closed down when Taliban rule ended in 2001.

Since then the charity has expanded its work, helping 12 million people, many of them girls, in rural and marginalised parts of Afghanistan, according to the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE).

"It is particularly meaningful because this is such a crucial time in Afghanistan," said Yacoobi, accepting the prize in Doha, Qatar. "I dedicate the prize to the AIL and all of the women, men and children we are educating."

The Taliban have launched sustained attacks since the withdrawal of most foreign troops late last year, straining the limited resources of Afghan forces. Many districts across the country are now fully or partly under Taliban control.

The $500,000 education prize awarded by WISE, set up by the Qatar Foundation, recognises individuals or teams who successfully address global educational challenges that can bring real change to communities. US First Lady Michelle Obama also spoke at the conference.

"With this prize, we know that we can continue to educate more and more Afghans, giving them hope and encouraging them to go forward no matter what they are facing," said Yacoobi.

She has also opened private schools under her own name, set up a radio station, and plans to establish a university for women as well as a television network.

Last year the prize was won by Ann Cotton, a British entrepreneur who set up Camfed, the Campaign for Female Education, which has helped educate more than one million girls in Africa.

Other past winners include Vicky Colbert, a Colombian, Madhav Chavan, an Indian, and Fazle Hasan Abed, from Bangladesh.

Please tag other members. This lady did something really good.

I remember my time in Afghanistan......It was 2005, and there weren't any school for boy, not to mention school for girls.

The tactics used by Taliban back then is to attack and assassinate teacher and pupil. Most school in rural district were simply empty building. There were talks between ISAF (us) and Local village leader but the discussion felt thru as ISAF cannot support 24/7 care on site and the ANA are not too bothered to provide guard to the school needed.

Story goes, there was this school near Kabul on a high village, it was bombed and it's original occupant was killed and we (ISAF) rebuild the school twice, found someone willing to run it and twice the school principal were assassinated and have his head throw back into school ground by the Taliban.

There were this British Major tour the school and he decided he would have take charge on it. He rebuild the school using his own company of men, he have his wife send over textbook and work book, pencil and stationary from the UK. And finally he went from village to village to talk to parent and persuade their parent that the school is safe and urge them to send their kids to school.

The Major also break the ISAF protocol and ask the ISAF command to draw a NFZ around the zone, which mean foot patrol and check point operate 24/7 overlooking the school. And then list the school as one of the Vulnerable Point (VP) and have his troop under his command check periodically.

He was killed in action by a Taliban Ambush, a RPG hit his jeep and he was drown by the riverbed or died of his wound, I am not sure). He never able to see his school thrive. And the school ground still stand as of 2014.

So if you ask me, that woman have some balls to go with her gut. Salute to her

one must point out that the reason this lady was forced to run secret schooling was because the usa government in its infinite unwisdom decided to bring down afghanistan's socialist government and install the mullahs and taliban into power.
