8th grade Christian girl accused of blasphemy over a typo in Punjab

then again its the muslims who kill the muslims and its the muslims again who kill the non-muslims......not the other way around....

you guys kill just to make a point.....and now you spoil the life of one family for one spelling mistake.....
This is sheer religious one upmanship, Simple as that. Aside from the legal status of blasphemy, the idea itself does have merit and legitimacy within the religion. But serious religious scholarship will contends that blasphemy can happen only when the perpetrator is conscious of the act and that he must have reasonable knowledge of the religion, at least at the laity level, BEFORE he can 'blaspheme' or insult the religion.

Condemning a child for blasphemy is absurd and smacks of religious one upmanship. Nothing more.

thousands of muslims murdered in gujrat.
killings of christians in orissa
etc

talk abt india... heck u even hate ur own low caste hindus.

Yes Thousands of Muslims killed in Gujrat. I have seen majority of the Indians condemn and does not support for the atrocities. But in that also you should know that it was first the Muslims who heinously locked the doors of that compartment and put petrol and other fuels and Burnt those Hindus alive. And due to this communal violence spread and lot of people got killed on both the sides. In which more muslims died than hindus which is quite obvious in a state where hindus are in Majority.
But the question is Why again the same Muslim who is always in front to start violence in most of the cases.
And about some Christians got killed in orrisa. very true done by Hindu fundamentalist. Which is also condemned to its fullest extent.

There is no country on the earth which imposes blasphemy law for a minor spelling mistake that also with a kid, who doesn't even know anything about blasphemy. It's not about Pakistan, It's height of religious paranoid

According to the school administration and religious leaders who took great exception to the hapless student’s mistake, the error is ‘serious’ enough to fall within the realm of blasphemy, Saturday.

The girl was never charged with blasphemy.

In fact, I think the school administration handled the case very well. It was a sensitive issue, and instead of allowing the girl and her mother to be the target of mob mentality, they compromised with the extremist mob and safely relocated the family.

But if she was christian, why was she forced/asked to sit in a class which teaches islamic studies etc?

I think it was just an analysis of the author in a poetic work. Anyways, why should it be a big deal?

Tolerance is gradually vanishing from our society and we people are so reluctant to make justice with minor issue but used to bring on level of no return. Teacher who identified this mistake (Bibi) could ignore and make correction instead of punishing innocent kid for nothing. Intellectuals of this kind are main problem in our educational & social environment.

Thats the problem, every time you compromise with the extremists they move the line a little more.
Do what we say or we will kill people is just another form or terrorisim.

Rule of law means the police protect people not stand aside and say sure beat a child sack her mother drive them out of town because we are scared if we dont some half wit prayer leader will incite a mob to murder.

Inch by inch you are giving Pakistan to the extremists and they dont need to use guns they just use ignorance and fear.

Of course she was. The child was never charged from LEGAL standpoint. But blasphemy from a religious standpoint is an appropriate charge only IF the perpetrator knew what he/she was doing. Was this child of sufficient intellectual and emotional maturity to exploit whatever religious education she has to DELIBERATELY be a blasphemer? If not, and reasonable people would say not, then those religious zealots who cast that charge are guilty of religious one upmanship. They were trying to prove their piety and their willingness to defend the faith -- against a child.

This is less about a particular religion than it is about the culture that allow and encourage this kind of intolerance and absurdly unthinking religious behaviors among the lay people. Those adults who made this charge should be ashamed of themselves. Too bad there are not enough defenders of common sense willing to fight for this child.

Well said brother. This is what has to happen and is right. But the problem is how can it be explain to the people who have closed their mind and are justifying and praising for the wrong people and practice. Much of the Population of Pakistan is very Radical in religious belief. And it cannot be corrected unless the scripture they follow so blindly needs to be altered. But that too is not going to happen as it is too prohibited as per their books and law. And if any one speaks against of it he will definitively will have a tough time living there. Because from the childhood only it is being taught the scripture is right and one should not question the authenticity of the same. And also taught that there should be zero tolerance to such voices. Which is to be even countered with violence and if need killing. So due to this there is a special kind of breed of generation which has come all these years and it could not be corrected in any way. Because there will always be a good number of people who will support it and stop it. And hence we find the terrorism coming out from this land so much than any place. And that is why one have seen a good number of people are even ready to compromise with their life for religion by becoming suicide bombers. It is strange, but it achieved by systematically preparing a person through his or her belief(and in this case is religion).

Why would we try to prove whether or not it was intentional. She is a child, and she was reprimanded. You don't need to study urdu to realize word in question had an extra letter added to it. Like I said the school administration handled the situation well.
