The Bangladesh Development Update: Economy Progressing, but Below Potential

Do you know both the countries have set up poverty line based on PPP?
World bank standard is $1.25, PPP
And in 2011, 24.7% were under that line.

I have no reason to embarrass you. But it was put forth for one of your countrymen who always insults BD.
Now go through these recent reports. I know there are enough drama by india to hide their shame of poverty.

Required: A new poverty line that shows 67% of India is poor - Firstbiz

There can be a million way to define the poverty line, depending upon how you see the poor and how you want them to live. Right now we can both agree to the international poverty line, given both countries are dirt poor and many people can only afford the basic necessities. That's why I quoted the world bank figures, not GoI defined ones. You should have no problem with them, should you?

Ministry of Overseas Indian affairs report that you quoted. According to this report barely 10000 Indians are in BD!

Yep they are legal immigrants, the number of illegals must be in millions.

World Bank uses the national poverty thresholds for the respective countries while measuring poverty rates.
Poverty headcount ratio at $1.25 a day (PPP) (% of population)
32.7% 2010 24.7% 2011
Poverty & Equity Data | India | The World Bank
Poverty headcount ratio at $1.25 a day (PPP) (% of population)
50.5% 2005 43.3% 2010
Poverty & Equity Data | Bangladesh | The World Bank

Okay it looks a bit confusing, according to this article there 29% of India was below the poverty line, that is Rs 1,407 a month (Rs 47/day or about $0.8 a day) would be considered poor in cities and Rs 972 a month (Rs 32/day or about $0.75 a day) would be considered poor in villages. If people earning less than $0.75 - $0.80 a day is 29% then people earning less than $1.25 would be quite higher don't you think?

One thing we need to remember is World Bank depends on the respective national institutions for these sort of figures.

This is a tricky thing that India always comes up with. They like to discus everything in PPP.

This discrepancy has large implications; for instance, when converted via the nominal exchange rates GDP per capita in India is aboutUS$1,704[7] while on a PPP basis it is about US$3,608

The above article was discussing gdp per capita and you are coming up with PPP
We can compare those two if you can come with India's poverty line in GDP per capita.

There is no definite source to point out number of illegals. A general observation is that people migrate from lower gdp/capita country to higher ones.

PPP
The world bank calculations for both (all) countries are in PPP. So it might be as you say. $0.8/0.75 nominal. PPP rates would equate both to $1.25. Same is true for BD.
The data for BD is old though, from 2010. But it seems unlikely that you have removed 20% from below poverty in 3 years. Something amiss.

I posted World bank data, which calculates for all countries in PPP. It is not possible or correct to equate in absolute terms. $1.25 dollars in all countries would have different values.

Well, the Indian states surrounding Bangladesh like West Bengal, Bihar (not bordering but in close proximity) and parts of the North East has low per capita income and living standard than Bangladesh so it's not surprising they are migrating to Bangladesh. And going with the remittance figures, their number seem to be quite high.

The article said, people "spending" less than the stated figures are poor, so it has to be PPP.

Regarding Bangladesh's poverty figure, there is no recent data but according to this article, population living on less than $2 per day is set to be 26% by 2015.

are you sure about that all employees are indians ? plz confirm me.
I will take this issue to authority

Yaar, its an internationally recognised global brand, not an Indian brand. You really think, they would do something illegal like this? The westerners in my experience are really really careful in the legal sense. The chap has just brain farted as usual.

I have asked him for reliable source, instead of "my company could not get it because it was all Indians rubbish".

I am expecting a "I saw it with my own eyes response."

i am just checking :)

Bangladesh's higher education standards, especially the technical / professional education standards are pretty bad, those Indian professionals who work in Bangladesh earn much more than the average Bangladeshi. The overall incompetency level in Bangladesh is so acute that they need Indian professional to set up and run their plants & machinery, be it a rolling mill or a power plant, they even need Indian managers to run their businesses, even their bread & butter business of garment manufacturing and export is mostly run by Indian managers.

BD per capita income is $1200 which is 83200 indian rupee.
If it is $1100 it is 76200 indian rupee

I miss indian trollers today very much. Seems like they have gone to stealth mode today in BD section. And out of no where you are poking your nose

Bangladesh GDP per capita is $829

The reference link is the one @Bong posted. Both data from 2013

Bar the tribal areas of Assam and Manipur, all the surrounding states have better per capita then Bangladesh.

The article seems to quote world bank figures. It seems to show significant reduction, almost unpalatable. We can only wait till actual figures are published. Till than, we can only compare the published figures.

You are quoting estimates by IMF, which considerably differs from the actual ones that world bank shows - $829 for last fiscal.
That is quite below that of West Bengal. And this is just nominal, the PPP figures differ much more!

Apart from IMF and WB there are independent bodies of BD to calculate these figures. As from the above link your state calculation was done by Indian authorities.

Bangladesh’s per capita income has touched $1,190, the government-run Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) has said.

For one, they are showing the GDP per capita lot higher than the figure published by world bank. Second, I compared 2013 figures. And I will believe world bank over BD govt figures. Just like you would, for Indian poverty figures.
Third, GDP figures for 2014 are higher for Indian states too.
