US okays sale of 8 Global Response Cutters to Pakistan

The U.S. Coast Guard has exercised a $250.7 million contract option to buy six more Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutters (FRCs), according to a Wednesday announcement from the service.
The latest option will bring the total number of FRCs under contracts to 24 with FRC builder Bollinger Shipyards for a total of $1.1 billion.
The Coast Guard has taken delivery of seven of the FRCs of a planned buy of 58 FRCs at a projected total cost of $3.93 billion. Bollinger and the Coast Guard have contract options for the first 30 FRCs. The service plans to recompete the FRC contract for the remaining 28 in 2015.
The Sentinels are slated to replace the 41 Island-class 110-foot patrol boats currently in service with the Coast Guard.
The 353-ton FRC is based on the Damen Stan Patrol Boat 4708 and can reach speeds in excess of 28 knots
Coast Guard Buys Six More Fast Response Cutters - USNI News

$250700000/6=$41,8 million unit cost > x8 = $335 million
$1100000000/24= $45,8 million unit cost > x8= $366 million
$3930000000/58=$67,8 million unit cost > x8= $542 million (this includes more than just the boats imho, this inludes program costs like the cost of adapting the Dutch design to USCG specs, setting up US production etc)

So, the price for those cutters for Pakistan does not appear outrageous (but not cheap either, unless the services included in the packages are multiyear e.g. first 5 or 10 years covered).

Well its known fact Pakistan Navy is need of ships and the Coast guard ships
The 8 Ships would keep eye out for trouble makers with out needing for F22P frigate to chase minor critters

6 Stationed in Karachi and 2 in Gawadar port is perfect

The ships , do help out with also sea rescue missions hopefully the weapon on the ship is sufficient vs Anti Piracy as well or narcotics shipment stoppage from India to Iran we need these ships to stop that illegal trade

@Penguin what advantages US boat will give over your stated boat in ops specially in Pakistani environment where there are many kinds of threats?

THe US boat is made of some composite material rather than metals like steel and aluminium. As a result, maintenance and operating cost may be lower than for a metal ship. It may also be that it has lower radar visibility due to lesser reflectivity. But, I'm not sure what the Dutch boats are made of.

@Penguin do u think it is a good buy for Pakistan as they also have option to go for Turkish MRTPs?

Yes. These are true patrol boats. The MRTPs by comparision, while significantly faster and taking heavier weapons (AShM), lack an on-board RIB plus launch/recovery gear for it, and being smaller they have much less endurance and seakeeping. MRTPs are more of an attack boat.

The largest member of the family is the MRTP-33, a patrol boat based on the Kaan-29, which is also operated by the Turkish Coast Guard. MRTP-33 is designed for patrol missions, and littoral warfare operations, including escort and fast attack missions, insertion and extraction of special forces. It can be fitted with CODAG high-seed propulsion system consisting of twin MTU diesels and a Honeywell TF50 gas turbine, all powering water jets. The diesels allow 28 knots patrol speed, while the gas turbine will enable the boat to reach its maximum speed of 55-60kt. The combined propulsion enables the boat to operate for up to 3 days at ranges up to 650 nm, at a speed of 24kt, while speeding on short dashes to speeds up to 55 knots. MRTP-33 has a crew of 20. Mission packages can include stabilized naval turrets with automatic guns (30mm), medium and long range guided missiles, 12.7mm machine guns, multi-sensor payloads, search and rescue equipment, decoys and special operations and divers support equipment.

Good purchase , Pakistan needs 20 ships . so 8 number is a good start for coast guard duties

We are owed 60 billion so we will take some ships to take of some of the owed money to us

Possible uses:
Interdiction of narco traffickers and smugglers
Fisheries Protection in an around Sir Creek
Interdiction of Human Traffickers both egress and ingress!

Now have we thought about why PN has asked for these boats specifically? Specially when the navy is cash strapped and in need of real firepower? I think what is not obvious is the fact the GoP/Armed forces think that there is a real problem of ingress or egress of unwanted and wanted individuals in and out of Pakistan!! ISIS/Daish etc.

Figure it out! Once again we are looking at things from the perspective of our friends on the Eastern borders.

good move in my opinion. a bit expensive but required esp since the navy is dispersing its assets along the makran coast.

there have been 3 DSCA announcements for PK during 2014. a sign of improving relations but are focussed on counter-insurgency requirements (2) and non-lethal transport upgrade(1). the US will refrain from approving major war material for PK, so our armed forces must focus on other countries, China, Ukaraine, Russia etc for such weaponary. the pics from Zhuhai-2014 are quite encouraging.

Furthermore, this acquisition releases the navy to use its more expensive to operates assets in their intended roles.
