Bdesh can be manufacturing hub for Indias northeast, neighbors

Dhaka, Dec 3 (UNB) Bangladesh can be the manufacturing hub for Indias northeast as well as the neighboring countries, providing regional connectivity, speakers said at a trade show here on Monday.
Bangladesh can provide regional connectivity it can be the manufacturing hub for Indias northeast as well as neighboring countries, said Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pankaj Saran.
The envoy was speaking at the inaugural session of a three-day exhibition, The India Show in Bangladesh, at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre that brought the business communities of both the countries together seeking to enhance Indias economic engagement with Bangladesh.
Commerce Minister GM Quader attended the function as the chief guest. President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) RV Kanoria, Indian Commerce Secretary SR Rao, President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Kazi Akramuddin Ahmed, and India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) president Abdul Matlub Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
Ficci, the largest and oldest apex business organisation of India, with assistance from the Indian government is hosting the show. The FBCCI and the IBCCI are the Bangladesh partners in the event, having the theme Partnerships for Progress.
Speaking on the occasion, GM Quader said the event would be an important platform for meaningful partnership and formulation of future plans for the expanding business.
Bangladesh offers most liberal investment facilities Indian investors should take some partners from Bangladesh to make the investment more meaningful, he said urging the prospective Indian investors to invest here.
On duty-free access of Bangladeshs products to Indian market, Quader said, It encourages us to export more to India.
He said the border haats along the India-Bangladesh borders are running smoothly. Were really ready to open more border haats.
Indian Commerce Secretary SR Rao said India is committed to reduce trade imbalance with Bangladesh. We welcome more export from Bangladesh to India.
He said India is agreed to open four more border haats to give a boost to border trading ensuring mutual benefit.
On cotton import from India, Rao said India is committed to concluding cotton package. Weve already given a draft to Commerce Ministry. He also said India will provide 500mw electricity to Bangladesh by the middle of 2013.
Ficci President Kanoria said, We need to come together and jointly address the challenges that confront us to realise the actual potential. One of the major challenges is the inadequate infrastructure at our borders which hamper trade.
He said both the countries will have to make it sure that infrastructure development, including trade related infrastructure, is given a priority by both sides.
Kanoria said the private sector will continue to do its part in enhancing bilateral trade relations. Ill suggest that Ficci, FBCCI and IBCCI work together even more closely for giving impetus to economic cooperation between the two countries.
A 50-member business delegation is already in Dhaka to attend the trade show and explore fresh investments and trade potential between the two countries.
The delegation would also take up issues related to tariff and non-tariff barriers to bilateral trade, customs cooperation, visa and finance during interactions with senior Bangladesh leaders.
Besides, the delegation is expected to meet Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and Industries Minister Dilip Barua.
The bilateral trade between the two nations is about US$ 4.3 billion. However, the trade balance is in favour of India. Kanoria said Bangladesh needs to diversify exports to India for a sustainable bilateral exchange.
Around 96 companies representing textile and handicrafts, automobile and spare parts, readymade garments, consumer products, jewellery, healthcare, education, information technology, agro-business and food processing, renewable energy, light engineering and others including , including Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland are showcasing their products here.
Seminars on investment opportunities and B2B sessions have been planned on the sidelines of the exhibition to find out ways to strengthen bilateral business cooperation and increase investment.
A number of B2B agreements on trade and investment are expected to be signed during the event.
A special feature of the India Show is the exhibition of Indian Gems & Jewellery, organised by the Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). This includes display and sale of some of the best pieces of contemporary Indian jewellery.
The India Show will be open to the business community and public on all three days from 10 am to 8 pm.
