What's new

Why didn't Bangladesh win a single medal in Commonwealth Games 2022, Birmingham?

Anyway @waz corrected me I need to take back at my comments about these games. They are of course very important for the athletes that take part and also important for certain countries as a source of national pride.
That's what I was looking for tbh.

You know what they say admitting is the first step! Not that I think Pakistan is somehow superior because we managed 8 medals.

As fa's as I'm concerned, Pakistan should've been second only to India because of our large population.

But if you look at where the medals have been won they were in traditional sports they have done well in previously.
Pakistan needs massive investment in these areas instead of bloody cricket.

India did the same thing and now have branched out to other areas.

Couldn't agree more.

I however take solace in the fact that with our broken, limping system and chors, ghaddars and makkars in charge of sports or the country in general, our athletes (especially in traditional streams like wresting/pehalvani, weigh lifting) still managed to rub shoulders with the best in the business and beat them in some instances.

The world is our oyster, if we can get our economy in order, make honest people in charge and focus on the right priorities.

Amazing to see Pakistan won 8 Medals till now ! keep going Pakistan.

Bangladesh has not won any medal due to Sheikh Hasina's corruption love and no investment in sports. Look at Bangladeshi Cricket.

I am curious as to why Bangladesh didn't win a single medal in Commonwealth Games 2022?

Did they boycott the games? Or just didn't participate because of what what Commonwealth Games represents?

Pakistan won 8 medals! (I think best CWG for Pakistan in some time).

India is clearly head and shoulders ahead of South Asian countries because their population and newfound wealth, but still lags way behind developed nations.

Even Sri Lanka with their economic turmoil managed to bag 4 medals! I'm not even going to mention other small island nations with populations of a few thousands who ended up winning the medals.

Why has the new Asian Tiger not won a single medal in CWG with their best economy in South Asia? Is this a topic that ever gets discussed in Bangladesh?

I please invite Bangladeshi and other South Asian members to discuss.

Don’t know enough about how sports are structured in BD to make a comment but BD needs to start winning some medals soon.

165 million population should be bagging dozens of medals and not getting a single one is embarrassing.

@Homo Sapiens -Are you able to explain the reason for BD’s lack of success in sports?

Economy and HDI indicators (healthcare, education) are certainly important determinants of sporting success but as the success of many African countries testify, there are other factors as well. They would be Investment in sporting activity (both public and private spending), quality of sporting administration, and I add with great caution and at a great risk of diverting the debate- sporting tradition and inherent physique of the population.

Take for eg India - it has earned a total of 61 medals (for a population of 1.4 billion). What it conceals of course is that on one hand you have states like Haryana (23 medals for a population of around 25 million) and Manipur ( 3 medals for a population of around 3-4 million); and then you have UP which has 5 medals for a population of almost the same as Pak (220 mio).

Regards

Sports are not big in Bangladesh aside cricket. You do have football as well.

That being said we do have British Bengalis of Sylheti decent who do well in combat sports in the UK e.g.

Legend Ali Jacko, multiple world champion in kickboxing;

Of course Ruqsana Begum who became a world champion in Muay Thai;

They are not 'non-games' and that's insulting to many athletes who have trained hard for them. Many medal winners also win big or do well in the olympic games.
As for forex and GD the data shows that nations who are more wealthy should do better in sports. So poorer Pakistan did well which is remarkable in itself.
Regardless I put up a post which shows Bengali folk can do well it's just that sports are not big there.

Thank you Waz Bhai for highlighting these. No person has Bengali or Pakistani stamped on their forehead. Only individuals with a penchant to win at sports.

If the OP wanted to highlight the non-athletic nature of Bangladeshis on a national level, then that would be inaccurate. We need to get away from propagating these stereotypes.

It is personal training and on a more important extent state coaching and sponsorship which counts on participation and winning medals in global events.

Who cares as what matters is hard economic power at the end of the day.

BD Taka against dollar is 95

Pakistan Rupee against dollar is 225

That is what counts in terms of a country's comprehensive national strength buddy and not some silly medals!
Why are you not addressing the issue 😒?

No problem bro lovely brother and sister these two and made a real name in tough combat sports. Please share.
Ms Begum has done haj as well now.
