The programme includes hoisting of party flag at half-mast while black flag atop BNP offices, offering Fateha and placing floral wreaths at Zia's mazar today, discussions and mourning rally.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia along with party leaders and workers is scheduled place wreath and offer Fateha at Zia's mazar at the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the morning.

The party has also taken 3-day programme to distribute cooked foods and essential commodities among the poor in different parts of Dhaka city. Khaleda is scheduled to distribute those at around 160 spots during the 3-day programme.

This man gave us new identity and showed us how to live with dignity. Please pray for him. May Allah subhana wa ta'ala grant him Jannat ul Firdous. Ameen!!!

Jolly good to see that people are at prayers.

Though switching over of loyalties is not quite what the militaries around the world appreciate.

The Pakistanis were not too happy that he revolted against Pakistan and then on evening of 27th March, Major Zia's unit (2/5 East Bengal Regiment) and members of the EPR arrived the Kalurghat radio station in Chittagong from where read out Declaration of Independence on behalf of their leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

@ General Tiki Tam Tam, it was not 2/5 East Bengal Regiment and EPR, it was only 8 East Bengal Regiment which was schedule to move towards West Pakistan whose advance party already went away. Some elements of East Bengal Regimental Centre and other dissident groups also joined. The EPR joined much later which was commanded by Maj Rafique who later became the Home Minister of AL govt in 2006-2002.

Since you raised the issue of his unit, I googled and every link indicates 2/5 EPR.

Can you give any link that he was in 8 EPR so that I can update?

The point is that he mutinied!

Not done by a soldier.

I second that. But make me sick when I see his sons and his current party followers who he left behind. The good people in BNP are long gone and only the reactionist, Mastan, Chur, liar have taken over the party.

Ziaur Rahman
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zia returned to Pakistan the following year, and witnessed political turmoil and regional division. East Pakistan had been devastated by the 1970 Bhola cyclone, and the population had been embittered by the slow response of the central government.[5] The political conflict between Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Awami League, which had won a majority in the 1970 elections, the President Yahya Khan and West Pakistani politician Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had brought sectarian tensions to a climax. Sheikh Mujib laid claim to form a government, but Yahya Khan postponed the convening of the legislature under pressure from West Pakistani politicians.[citation needed] Bengali civil and military officers had alleged institutional discrimination through the 1960s, and now distrust had divided the Pakistani Army. Upon his return, Zia attained the rank of Major and was transferred to the 8th East Bengal regiment stationed in Chittagong to serve as its second-in-command.[citation needed

General Zia-ur-Rahman was the brave soldier of our land. He fought valiantly alongwith his Bengal Regiment troops in the Khemkaran sector of west Pakistan. Wiki says about him and his troops:

"During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Zia served in the Khemkaran sector in Punjab as the commander of a Pakistani company unit of 300–500 soldiers. The sector was the scene of the most intense battles between the rival armies."

"The Pakistani government awarded Zia's unit with the highest numbers of gallantry awards for heroic performances during the war. Ziaur Rahman himself won the distinguished and prestigious Hilal-e-Jurat medal, and his unit won 2 Sitara-e-Jurat medals and 9 Tamgha-e-Jurat medals from the Army for their brave roles in the 1965 War with India."

In 1971 our political leaders did not directly proclaim the independence of Bangladesh. They were not ready for a war, east Pakistan had very few people with arms. During the period that ZAB and Yahya Khan were negotiating with Sk. Mujib, Bangali troops in the Bengal, Punjab and Baluch Regiments were continuously transferred to the west and in exchange non-Bangali troops were being brought over to the east from west.

After a sudden attack by the PA in Dhaka, lives of all the remaining Bangali troops, police and Ansars in the east were in danger. PA troops were determined to disarm them suddenly and kill all of them point blank. The Bangali troops wanted to rebel and fight, but there was no direction from the political leadership.

In a precarious moment like that an unknown Major of Pakistan Army proclaimed independence. This single declaration saved the lives of many thousands Bangali troops, Police and Ansars. It created an opportunity so that they could move away from their garrisons so as not to be trapped, disarmed and killed by the PA troops.

The 1971 liberation war could not have been successfully initiated without these armed men. Simply speaking, a resistance force could not have been formed without the direct participation of these troops.

So, I think, Ziaur Rahman's proclamation of independence bears an important meaning. This declaration gave direction to the entire population, saved the lives of Bangali troops in the PA, who, in turn, helped to form Mukti Bahini. These troops were at the core of our resistance. Our young trainees took arms trainings at their hands, and then fought against the PA.

President Zia saved our country two times. One time on 27th March and another time on 7th November, 1975, when people and armed forces bestowed him with the responsibility to lead the country, which he did perfectly well until he was assassinated on 30th May, 1981 by some foreign bullets fired by the instigation of General Ershad.
