Agreed though... I swear it does sometimes smell foul! Either all the marine life died or something really is rotting there thanks to the E.coli oozing happily or even thanks to the sediments deposited which probably hold back all the unprocessed shit!

I can distinguish methane been in the lab long enough ....But that foul smell is rotting stuff...best can be described by happy bacterial colonies! - Just saying

With the risk of being going off topic, In Karachi the garbage in continuously being dumped in the Arabian Sea and its mangrove forests.The Land Mafia dumper trucks unload trash – increasing height of the already giant waste mountains then the bulldozers are seen spreading it into the sea to make it a piece of land, then construction waste, sand and rocks are added on the top and land is leveled. Then this land is sold for residential plots for high profits. Karachi’s land has literally become even more precious than gold. It is said that majority of the killings under the ambit of “target killings” are done by the opponents fighting to grab land. Such groups are infamously branded as the “Land Mafia”.

It is the smell that most probably comes from decaying algae that is left behind when the tide recedes. If it is too pungent (though I doubt) it might be hydrogen sulfide resulting from decaying organic matter. There is nothing else one smells at the shoreline.

E. coli do not survive there because salt concentration is too high. There might be halophilic vibrio species though.
