With tensions between the two nuclear-tipped neighbours rising, India’s border security force (BSF) announced on Wednesday that they will not indulge in the annual ritual of exchanging sweets on Independence Day.

Despite hostilities, Indian BSF and Pakistan Rangers have traditionally exchanged sweets at border crossings, particularly at the Wagah-Attari border on Independence Day. Pakistan had declared independence on August 14, 1947, while India had declared independence just a day later on August 15.

However, BSF’s Inspector General (IG) Frontier Anil Paliwal announced on Wednesday that, “This time this thing will not happen, we will neither receive nor give sweets to Pakistan Rangers on the occasions of Independence Days of both countries.”

His announcement comes just a day after Islamabad had summoned a high ranking Indian diplomat to lodge protest over cross border firing.

Sources speaking on the condition of anonymity said that the decision was taken after IG Frontier had received instructions from BSF headquarters following in light of recent escalation of cross border incidents along both the Working Boundary and the Line of Control.

“We all know the prevailing situation, exchanging pleasantries and sweets with Pakistan troops under present circumstances will give wrong signals to general public,” said sources.

Pakistan and Indian forces at the border usually exchange sweets and pleasantries on national days such as Independence Day, Republic Day and significant religious holidays of both countries including Eid and Diwali.

Earlier in July, Pakistan and Indian forces had foregone the traditional exchange of sweets on Eid.

Previously, no exchange of sweets took place on Eidul Azha in October 2014. Subsequently, no sweets were exchanged on Diwali.

While we are at it, lets stop that whole border closing ceremony charade...it looks quite comical and silly.

Use the money saved to improve actual border protection and surveillance capabilities especially in the weaker zones.

Then completely stop from our side. Seal off that area with a brick wall and post a big picture of 1971 surrender on the other side for them to shout at.

Less comical border engagement + More border security = better for India.

Who are we trying to impress by giving sweets and conducting this ceremony of silly walks?

What about 2002 drama after parliament attacks... Where 200+ Indian soldiers got killed by planting own land mines

Pakistan will respond with that picture... Then even more hoopla from the warmonger Indian news

Cant stop unilaterally? Of course it can be, is India hostage to the measly trade it conducts with Pakistan? You can keep the trade and border post open, in fact a new professional trade/customs facility can be created for just that purpose (with actual intent of handling modern day trade through trucks and rail if things ever get to the stage one day). I am talking about sealing the silly stadium spectacle area...it serves no purpose or reason.

Pakistanis that are upset with India are already upset with India.....no changing that whether silly spectacles and sweet exchanging takes place or not.

Pakistan is free to post/do whatever it wants on its side. Indian media and Pakistan media are already utter crap so those that are sensible will not care how they portray it...and those that are stupid and sensitive already get agitated by them for no reason in the first place.....better to save money and conduct things professionally and quietly without fanfare as much as possible. The picture should be posted only if Pakistan keeps doing the silly border ceremony on its side of the border when India stops. If Pakistan stops too, there is no reason....we can both move on to a more professional level.

I guess they are embarrassed by the 'let down' they felt when Pakistan because of cross border terrorism rejected their ''so called'' soaked in blood of our citizens on Eid this year.

A steak and a toilet would be good gifts to get India on their birthday this year.
