Two Hellenic Navy submarines set for service

Two Hellenic Navy submarines participated in a tactical exercise at sea and are expected to join fleet operations soon, augmenting the navy's presence in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean seas.

HS Pipinos (S-121), the first of the three Hellenic Shipyards-built Type 214 Papanikolis-class submarines, and HS Okeanos (S-118), understood to be the world's only Air Independent Propulsion (AIP)-capable Type 209/1200, joined other submarines and surface vessels for the 'Anapnefstir' tactical exercise, which took place in eastern and central Aegean waters from 16-20 February.

According to IHS Jane's Fighting Ships , Pipinos is scheduled for commissioning in 2015.

Okeanos received its AIP fit under the Neptune II mid-life modernization programme.

Greece's Type 209/1200 submarine HS Okeanos (S-118) was redelivered back to the Hellenic Navy (HN) from Hellenic Shipyards at Skaramangason on 20 October, having completed its Neptune II mid-life upgrade programme. Sea trials of the boat are expected to begin immediately and it should be fully operational by the end of the year. The third of the four-strong Poseidon class, HS Okeanos was launched by HDW in Kiel in November 1978 and arrived in Greece in January 1980.

If Okeanos is not counted, then so shouldn't the 214s
