Work begins on Bangladesh-Myanmar rail line

You just bypassed many other point.... that is all the cost is paying by BD that myaanmar will also use while its connecting to bd or if want to use chittagong port to china... n you are forgetting this is also important of china upon which it is dependent very much... n bangladesh is a market of 166 million people .. its not a small market... myaanmar can gain a lot from it... on the other for bd... myaanmar is important for connectivity and getting gas.. only it is now stopped as bhartis will ask for gas if bd gets connected from myaanmar...

But whatever the matter bd is always thankful to both myaanmar and china for its friendly relation... but it is mutual... but on the other hand if you look at India it will use infrastructure that bd will hardly use but bd will pay for it and all the construction work will be done by bhartis contractor...

How do you this, for a Bangali living in Canada, seems to know more then the ordinary Bangldeshi.

A BD-China line which goes through Mayanmar. How commercially viable would this line be as opposed to BD-China transit through India?

1) When considered that BD will build a $9 billion deep sea port, the transit via Burma is the most feasible route.
2) Our goal is not only to reach Kunming of China, but also to reach SE asia. Hence, Burma route is more needed. Indian route cannot take us to SE asia.
3) A bullying India cannot be trusted. Burma cannot also be trusted. But, China can play a role there.
4) China-India border remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall. But, the Burmese route is an all weather route.

All considered, Burma route, both railway and road, is more feasible than any BD-India-China route.

Just compare with the Indian 1 billion credit... through the credit the infrastructure that will be built mostly India will use it but bd government is paying it and all the projects will be done with Indian companies or contractors... in this case bd is paying it and will also pay for the road construction other then this rail link and through this trade will increase between bangladesh and burma... n china also need this to improve their yunan province by using the deep sea port of Bangladesh.... n all the link will go through burma it will be a major trade hub between bangladesh, china and south east asia... if India also want to connect through SE Asia they will also require myaanmar... but India was against this coxs bazar - myaanmar road link... instead it was asking for india-bangladesh-ne india- myaanmar road link to connect to se asia... but bangladesh did not agree as the proposed route was not accepted.. instead bangladesh decided to bypass the asia route and then connect to it by building this road link and rail link and offered bd will pay for it... n it will also serve to connect to china ... as china is one of the major ally of china so this project has gone through...

BNP government was against the indian proposed asian highway as that was designed to give transit to india in the guise of asian highway... without any benefit BNP was against signing it...

Why are you wasting your precious time trying to teach anything to the Indians? They are more meritrious than us, and they know the pros and cons of the credit deal with India. But, they are a kind of bullying type. So, they come up with all those craps, we did that for you or we are doing this for you kind of bragging. Indians are just like that. God has created them with a special kind of DNA. You will not see this trend to any other nationalities.

Also note that BD govt wants to pay in full all the expenses incurred with regard to a road and a railway line INSIDE Burma, that serves our interest. But, our small-hearted big DADA asks us to build similar infrastructure with our money, but under a credit facility with interest from the DADA. And, these tiny Indians come and brag about their super-rich India helping us to build infrastructure. It must be the joke of this century.

You did not mention it is not only their credit but main aim is to promote all the lower graded indian products to build the infrastructure... they are getting 3 benefit in a shot... getting free transit, promoting indian companies to build infrastructure and getting interest also for the credits... how much fools one can make ... this deal is a prime example for this..

Do you blame them? If we were in their situation, wouldn't we do the same? anyways, they are just looking out for their interest and we have to look after ours. once the current govt is removed, everyhting will fall bak together

Sorry, can you show the new item where bangladesh has offered to pay for road and railway line INSIDE burma? I though you are connecting to their border town.

I do not have a link now, but there were news reports about the road a few years ago during the military rule. The reports said of a proposal forwarded by the GoB to the GoM whereby BD would use its own money to build/develop a 23 km road inside Burma, that connects BD to the roads that link with China and also SE Asian countries. Other proposals include the construction of a 500 MW hydro power plant inside Myammar that would be financed by the GoB. BD proposed to purchase a minimum of 2/3rd of the production.

Under an unchanged situation it is expected that BD will build the Burmese portion of railway that will connect it to the railway system of SE Asia, although I have not read a specific news about it. However, you have to understand that BD needs all these projects done for its own interest, and there is no way the sitting duck Burmese Junta will spend a single dime on these although their people will be more using the facilities than BD itself.

P.S: I also do not know how many km of rail tracks will have to be built inside Burma.

It is pretty simple stuff. We need to use it, we will pay for it. Lot of people do lease hold improvement on someone else's property.

I know. I just wanted to see the actual news item which says so. It was in reply to a post saying that India wants to build infra in bangladesh by giving loan where as bd is doing same in burma for free.
Anyway, just post when you find. Thanks.

It is not unusual that indians do not trust non-Indians and take any of their statement at its face value. Probably, they wonder how a BD like 3rd class country can be so generous to a neighbour whose imfrastructure is almost broken. Read the article below to know the truth:

Bangladesh-Myanmar road link

New Age – August 2, 2007

The signing of the agreement last Friday in Dhaka between Bangladesh and Myanmar to establish a direct road link between the two countries is indeed a landmark development. Its importance and far-reaching impacts – once the agreed 153 kilometre-long road building project is completed – could hardly be overemphasised. The Taka 933.46 crore road building project will be implemented in two phases. The 25 kilometres-long first phase that includes 23 kilometre inside Myanmar, linking Guandhum in Cox’s Bazar with Bawlibazar in Myanmar, will be built by Bangladesh at a cost of Taka 141 crore.

The proposal for the construction of this important link road project was being discussed between the leaders of the two countries for the last few years, but somehow it did not take a concrete shape so far. However, Foreign Adviser Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury visited Yangon in April this year and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project was initialled at the time. Communication Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, who accompanied Chowdhury and Deputy Construction Minister of Myanmar U Thant Shaw signed the deal. Last Friday, the same agreement was finalised and signed by Communication Adviser MA Matin and the visiting Myanmar Construction Minister Saw Tun.

Chittagong was connected with Arakan state of Myanmar – now Rakhine state – through a road link for ages until early 1960s when it was discontinued. There was also a regular air service between Chittagong and Akyab, which also ceased around the same time.
In a way the road project will revive an old historical link between Bangladesh and Myanmar, the only neighbour other than India having a common border with the country. Once the project is completed, it is likely to pave the way for establishing direct road link with other Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Besides, it will also help develop direct road link with Southeastern Chinese province of Yunnan (capital Kunming) as well Laos via Myanmar.

Interestingly, during the formal meeting between the two sides prior to the signing of the deal last Friday, both sides discussed the prospects of stretching the proposed road link up to Kunming via Myanmar. But at the end of the meeting the Myanmar minister Saw Tun told newsmen: ‘This does not depend only on our decision, it also depends on China and we will have to negotiate with them’. Matin also agreed saying that a feasibility study should be carried out on the project with assistance from the Chinese.

Making China interested in the extension of the road link up to Kunming may not be that difficult a task because Beijing had earlier reportedly shown interest in the possible use of the Chittagong port for catering to the needs of eastern Chinese provinces and for that purpose such an all-weather road linkage is a must. It was earlier reported in the Weekly Holiday that the last Bangladesh ambassador in Beijing before living the capital earlier this year had requested China to help develop the oil sector by building roads and pipelines in Bangladesh that would also allow China to ship crude oil through Chittagong port to eastern China via Myanmar. The departing Bangladesh envoy had handed over the proposal to the Chinese vice foreign minister.

The interesting part of the proposal, as reported in Holiday recently, is that it invited Beijing to transport China-imported crude oil from Chittagong port to China’s Yunnan province through Myanmar by building oil pipeline. This proposal appeared timely because China had already started the construction of a 2,500 km gas pipeline from Myanmar’s Kyakphu in the Bay of Bengal to Rili in Yunnan.

Mutual dependence

Analysts believe that lasting and fruitful relations are based on mutually beneficial projects through which both the sides could be in a win-win situation. The Cox’s Bazar – Yangon road link is likely to be stretched up to Kunming without much difficulty only if the interests of all the three countries involved converge. China’s global and regional interests are likely to prompt Beijing to study the proposals it received from the former Bangladesh envoy to China with due seriousness and come up with appropriate response.

In its own interest Bangladesh needs to get involved with both Myanmar and China in developing mutually beneficial projects to create closer cooperation.
