WOMEN IN SCIENCE: Is Bangladesh ahead of the West?

Our current ambassador to Thailand and Nepal are also woman. There may be even more.
As well as the current high commissioner to Nigeria. Mrs. Shahnaz Gazi. She organized a independence day celebration in Abuja in 26th March, 2018.

Let’s not compare to western society. Will bangladesh’s Culture allow for women to put aside family and focus on science!? I don’t think so... especially when one night stands/ hookup culture etc is looked down upon which students/ professors/ scientists in the west use to their advantage for sexual release while not having to invest emotional/ family time from their already busy schedule behind scientific research. So think wisely before you make up your mind.

Comparing with the west is an overestimation, but anyways this is a great news. But I can't understand the dichotomy between the rising religious radicalism and Bangladesh's overall impressive performance in social indicators. They somehow represent a kind of contradiction.

I think the Islamists are split into two camps. One lot sat stay at home; and the other lot say education, education, education. For example, in radical Iran, there are more female university students than male.

Its a welcome trend but there need to be results on science front from BD to matter (whatever the underlying gender split is).
Except for agriculture it will take a LONG time for any proper results to come out of BD...the state of research in universities here is abysmal.

Radicalism is on the rise...so is secularism...what happened in Bangladesh is downfall of moderation(our parent's generation were moderates...who prayed 5 times a day and enjoyed Rabindra Sangeet and Pahela Baishakh)...our generation are either too religious or too secular(me)...that's why you saw massive crowds both at Shahbagh and Hefajot rallies...the society is divided like never before.

We can see it on this forum too.

Well its not the worst thing to have as 1st priority to be honest. BD should segue into nutrition/health next, a lot of such science out there is very Western based and its of varying relevance to Desi population stock. BD (central institutionally wise when using taxpayer money) should focus on building one pyramid of research with Agri as the base and build up levels from that rather than being scattered. Let the other fields be handled by private sector growth (and hopefully more private colleges etc) and also those that can afford foreign education and hopefully later return. Taxpayer money spread thin over everything in some optical effort to be in everything will not produce a sustainable drive for quality research in the depth required.

Thats your perception....
So, tell us what is your own perception or what the women folk may think. I always thought kitchen is always off limit to the husbands, and a husband would do hard work outside so that his woman can keep herself busy in the house and kitchen. But, more changes are happening in South Asia than it is in the western world or Japan, korea and other developed countries. I think women are coming up with less womanly subjects like engineering or science in my country.

In the developed world women like to study liberal arts, literature, humanities, history, etc. even today. I think, men in my country are nuts with less matter in their heads. Or, may be they spend more time to think about their girlfriends and lose concentration on his studies.
