Women Business Leaders from India

Excellent thread fateh71

But are these all "Ameer **** ki betiyan" ? ( Daughters of rich fathers/families) Or they started from the lowest rung and went up to their positions?

A couple of them got investments from their families and set up.

May be Kiran Majoomdar is an exception, can someone help me here?

Yes, i will help you.

1. First thing first its about women achiever please don't bring divide and rule in everything, spare them from rich and poor.

2. In developing nations we have most number of women achievers and its a achievement. Even they can't break glass ceiling in so called developed nations.

3. As per your query there are many from poor/middle class background.

For example:

Sudha Murthy

It was her savings of Rs. 10,000 that was instrumental in the founding of Infosys; N.R. Narayana Murthy proudly mentions this fact on several occasions.

Correct, its about achievement, but my point is, if your family owns a business then high chances are that you will be incepted at MD level in the company. And if you are the head of the company 10 yrs later, can that be considered as a success. The example, you gave was sudha murthy, great, she is an achiever (whatever that may be), but can you consider Anil ambani as a success? Whom would you respect more? Dhirubhai or Anil?

Yes, thats why I lauded fateh for starting this thread. Its pleasing to eyes to see women at the top posts too

Everyone enjoys 'rags to riches' stories here is what Indian housewives from economically poor background have done

From Rs. 80/- to Rs. 5,00,000,0000/- turnover.

Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad,

The Economic Times Award given to the Institution for Corporate
Excellence "Business Woman Of the Year" on 6th September 2002

popularly known as Lijjat, is an Indian, women's organization involved in manufacturing of various fast moving consumer goods.

The organization's main objective is empowerment of women by providing them employment opportunities.

Started in the year 1959 with a seed capital of Rs. 80, Lijjat today has an annual turnover of around Rs. 500 crore (Rs. 5 billion), with Rs. 250 crore in exports and provides employment to around 42,000 employees. Lijjat is head quartered in Mumbai and has 67 branches and 35 divisions all over India.

The women borrowed Rs 80 from Chaganlal Karamsi Parekh, a member of the Servants of India Society and a social worker. They took over a loss-making papad making venture by one Laxmidasbhai and bought the necessary ingredients and the basic infrastructure required to manufacture papads.

On March 15, 1959, they gathered on the terrace of their building and started with the production of 4 packets of Papads. They started selling the papads to a known merchant in Bhuleshwar.

From the beginning, the women had decided that they would not approach anyone for donations or help, even if the organization incurred losses
