The Russian Defense Ministry has signed a deal for 92 Su-34 Fullback fighter-bombers from the Sukhoi aircraft maker, the ministry said on Thursday.

The deal under which the warplanes are to be delivered by 2020 was signed by Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and Sukhoi General Director Igor Ozar.

This is one of the largest warplane contracts under the government arms procurement program and it will help replace all of the Su-24 bombers currently in service with the “4+ generation” aircraft, Serdyukov said.

The Ministry will take delivery of 10 Su-34s in 2012, all of them to be deployed in the Western Military District. Last year six fighter-bombers were delivered to the Air Force. These come under an initial contract for 32 Su-34s.

At present the Air Force has 12 Su-34s.

Factoring in the new contract, the Air Force will have a total of 124 Su-34s.

The ministry previously said a total of 70 Su-34s will be delivered by 2015.

Commenting on the deal, Douglas Barrie, air warfare specialist at International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, said “the Su-34 - previously known as the Su-27IB - has been long in the gestation.”

“The program began in the 1980s and has suffered as a result of funding problems. It is entering service well over a decade after it was envisaged originally to be replacing the Su-24 Fencer.”

However the Su-34 will - with the appropriate avionic and weapons systems - provide the air force with a capable long range strike platform, with considerably more punch than the Su-24, he said.

“Work is continuing to integrate modern air-to-surface weaponry now in development in Russia on the Su-34, with trials being carried out at the air force test center at Akhtubinsk.”

The news of the contract comes a week after Russia partially resumed flights of Su-24 Fencer tactical bombers after one of them crashed in Russia’s Urals.

All Su-24s were grounded after the crash, in the woods of the Kurgan region during a routine flight on February 13. Both pilots ejected safely. The crash was the third of a Su-24 in Russia over the last four months. The two previous crashes occurred in October and December 2011.

It has been in service with the Russian Air Force since the mid-1970s. However, in recent years Russia has gradually been phasing out the planes, which have a patchy safety record.

The Defense Ministry earlier said the Air Force will procure over 1,500 new aircraft by 2020.

Russia started the full-scale production of Su-34s in 2008 at a Novosibirsk-based aircraft-manufacturing plant, a subsidiary of the Sukhoi Aircraft Holding.

Designed by Sukhoi, the $36-million Su-34 fighter-bomber is a two-seat strike aircraft fitted with twin AL-31MF afterburner turbojet engines.

It is designed to deliver high-precision strikes on heavily-defended targets under any weather conditions, day or night, and is equipped with a 30-mm GSh-301 cannon, up to 12 Alamo or Archer AAMs, ASMs, and bombs.

Does IAF looking to buy some 50-70 of these machines soon. As once they had plans to induct bombers.

Is this line part of article ??? I doubt India will go for Su34, it is because of this reason why India is going for Multi Role aircrafts. Also aircrafts like Su34 which are dedicated bomber will give away the type of operation IAF is going to do. It is because of this reason that for bomber role either Su30 mki or Rafale will be used so that enemy airforce can't make out what kind of operation the indian jets are going to carry out.
If India will go for dedicated bombers, then they will go only for long range bombers like Tu160 or future PakDa.

Nope. The 5th gen Sukhoi PAK FA T-50 is what the next step is. India would be getting 50 in flyaway condition by 2016 and the remaining 250 will be manufactured by HAL. These would be made operational by 2020.

Cheers!

Dude , seriously

We will not get 50 PAKFA by 2016
And HAL will not deliver 250 FGFA by 2020 , coz that would be stupid , and if it was possible then India would have cancelled mmrca

At The earliest We can expect Deliveries of 48 INITIAL PAKFA/FGFA to begin in 2018 , 2 yrs after Delivery to Russian Airforce
While First of the 166 HAL built FGFA will enter service in 2022 , and deliveries will continue till Yr 2030

Buying SU-34 is not a bad idea as it is dedicated fighter-bomber, i think Indian air force is planning to use Mirage for this role. You should remember Rafale is not a fighter-bomber its a multirole combat aircraft.

.
As far this Article Is concerned , No India will not order Su 34
Coz for the Foreseeable future Ground Attack operations will be performed By Rafales
India is looking to order 126 Rafales to replace 95 Mig27 and 55 Jaguars in Ground Attack role , We will probably order Additional 64-80 Rafales to replace Remaining 80 Jaguars and 50 Mirage 2000V5
Hence I dont see us ordering Su 34 since the Remaining shortage of 75-90 Aircrafts will be filled up by 214 FGFAs

.
If India needs more aircraft for emergency stop gaps im guessing the IAF will ask for retired armee de'lair M2K's.

India already has 272 MKIs in the pipeline plus 250 PAK FA's after that.

For A2G the RAFALE has been chosen, and it will do an excellent job.

1. Indian doctrine has changed, We are looking for Multirole platform rather than dedicated fighter bomber.
2. There is a chance that Indian Army aviation wing can opt for Su34, but for IAF it won't happen in near future.
3. Rafael and Su34 can take almost equal load and equal amount of amunation.

So I don't think that this masterpiece will come in grey color. :)

Well their is a very valid reason why Indian Doctrine changed
In the 1970-80s Aircrafts lacked the ability to switch between Ground Attack to Air superiority role in flight , and they lacked adequate radar systems to enable pilot to keep an eye out for both Ground and Arial Targets
Also another Important factor is that in 1980s Indian Air force Had some 880 Fighters ie 350 Ground Attack and 530 Air to Air
and hence we could afford to send 2 Mig21 to escort 2 Mig27

Today , with Indian Fleet at 650-670 Fighters we cant afford to send 2 MKIs to escort 2 Jaguars , Hence We need Multirole Fighters coz Indian Fleet is likely to Hover between 700-750 even in 2020

.
Strategic command was looking 40 fighter bombers - this could be an option but chances are slim.
