Hi,
We don't smile because it is ingrained in us from childhood----our mother, father, grand parents, aunts uncle, older relatives refarin us from smiling.
They say it is stupid to smile---men of character don't smile---men of character show a serious posture all the time---. It is important to look mean and nasty all the time--look serious and menacing---kindness and gentleness is frowned upon---.
MK, I do not think this is the norm though. It just depends on ones background and upbringing and in reality the circumstances in which one grows up.
Military men smile and smile more than civilians. This is a fact, however it has to be the right setting. I would just ask people to searh online for the photos of any of the Pakistani military leaders and you are bound to run into a photo or two of them smiling. In official photographs, you maintain a serious composure because officially the armed forces are very conservative. However in casual photos of Zia, Musharraf, Ayub and many others, you will find them smiling and those who have met them, have found them to be fairly jovial and easy going.
