India’s New Fighters Have Serious Engine Problems — War Is Boring — Medium

"In March, Indian defense minister Manohar Parrikar revealed the propulsion problems.

There have been no fewer than 69 investigations involving engine failures since 2012, according to Parrikar. Between January 2013 and December 2014 alone, the Indian Air Force recorded 35 technical problems with the turbofans.

Parrikar attributed the failures to faulty bearings that contaminated the plane’s oil supply. It seems that metal fatigue led to tiny pieces of metal shearing off the friction-reducing bearings, which then entered the oil system.

This accounted for 33 of 69 engine failures.

Another 11 failures were the result of engine vibrations, while eight more arose from a lack of pressure in that same lubricating oil. New Delhi has not revealed the cause for the remaining 17 incidents.

The Air Force responded by taking the issue up with NPO Saturn, the Russian manufacturer. According to Parrikar, the company has come up with nine different modifications to help solve the problems.

India has already incorporated these “fixes” into 25 engines built at its plant in Koraput. In the future, the engines should benefit from an improved lubrication system, superior-quality oil and bearings that are a better fit.

However, a more general worry for the Air Force is the poor serviceability of the Su-30MKI fleet — meaning the number of aircraft actually available for operations on a daily basis.

Based on figures given by Parrikar, only 110 Su-30MKIs are “operationally available.” From a total of more than 200 aircraft that Irkut and HAL had delivered by February 2015, that means 56 percent are ready at any given time.

And In s war with India USA will back India and stop spares. So paf will have less than half of there sixty off fslcobs grouded just like in kargil when only 16 where flying from forty planes
Pakistan does need a few squadrons of heavies or medium multi-role fighters in numbers, no questions about it. Pakistan doesn't need a strike platform as it won't be striking anyone. Their goal is to defend, so multi role works. Heavies or medium multi-roles will be able to defend, intercept and JFT can be used for ground support.

The serviceability of the Sukhoi SU-30MKI fighter jets have increased over the past eight-nine months, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said Tuesday, adding that it will further improve in the coming months.

The IAF's frontline combat jets have faced serviceability issues, specially after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, as many companies making spare parts separated from Russia.

"With concentrated efforts, we have been able to increase the serviceability of the Sukhois by about seven per cent over the last eight-nine months. So, that is an achievement," Parrikar informed the Rajya Sabha as members raised questions on the availability of spare parts.

The minister said by the end of the year, the serviceability will improve by 70 percent.


"We have improved the serviceability by seven per cent, almost from 49-50 to 56-57 per cent, we intend to get it 70 per cent by year end," he said.

Addressing the issue of spares, he said some these "were coming from the Ukraine and also Russia. We do have problems. We have taken up the issue with the Russian government. In fact, I had a discussion with the (Russian) minister. In certain cases, with approval, we are also acquiring replacement parts from western sources. Some of the sources of the Russians themselves are western," he said.

"A lot of them are from Israel, France and the like. So, those are being brought directly with Russia's approval or, in certain cases, we are coordinating the efforts and getting the spares," he said.

The serviceability rate of multi-role fighter aircraft Sukhoi is likely to improve to 75 per cent by this year end from the current level of 56-57 per cent, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said today.

"We have been trying to improve the serviceability of Sukhois. It has improved by seven per cent in last 8-9 months to reach to 56-57 per cent," he said in Rajya Sabha, exuding hope that it would go up to 75 per cent by the year end.


A total of 35 incidents of engine failures in air or other engine-related problems have occured between January, 2013 and December last year, reports Business Standard.


To a question, Parrikar said the Russian Original Equipment Manufacturer had introduced a number of measures to contain and eliminate technical issues that have led to engine troubles in flight.


"OEM has offered nine modifications or technological improvements for implementation in the production of new aero engines and during overhaul of engines," he said.


Parrikar said the Indian Air Force has also finalised long-term repair agreements with Russian OEMs to improve availability of aircraft for operational use. "25 new engines with modified technology have been procured from Russia," he said.

Indians bemuse me. 200, 300 or 400 SU30's, how many of them enetered in Pakistan in 2002 & 2008? how many surgical strikes these 100's of SU30 have conducted inside Pakistan thus far?:dirol: You guys boast about numbers like some kids. LOL

our need is not that big, why do we forget this fact?

PAF is going to improve on JF 17 program for sure, then get couple of F 16 block 52, or 60 if possible, & induct few squadrons of new 4.5 gen aircraft. even a formation of 2 jets can cause headache for IAF, if any such scenario comes up. so, i'm not worried about how big India's air force will be cuz their armed forces has always been bigger than ours since 1947. so why even worry? quality over quantity any day!

I'm pretty sure we're going to get 4.5 gen jet with the way our armed forces are now planning & equipping, the question remains which one? who knows Russians come up with a surprise offer for us & Chinese option is always on the table. j10? j20 is years away.

SU 30 does hold an edge over PAF aircrafts interns of payload and range without refuel ,but it's not invincible. The RCS is a major drawback.

Since it will be used in a strike role, although having a great radar, it will give away its presence in pak airspace. Carrying a larger payload , it will again be detected easily. These two factors give away any stealth options that it may want to preserve.Pakistan is just next door so a long loiter time or long combat radius holds no edge really. PAF on the defensive in own air space can hold itself against Su 30 strike formations with force multipliers and a mix array of AD fighters.
In peacetime, if India has infrastructure to overhaul and maintain two engines for every aircraft, well and good, otherwise having mig 29 and SU 30 around 350 or more in inventory will be a nightmare.

On the defensive, in indian airspace, Su 30 will be quite useful as AD fighter but then again that's the job of mig 29 I think.

A dedicated strike aircraft for PAF apart from F16's and mirages with a capabilities of a heavy strike fighter like F15E or EF2000 might not be that necessary. For deep strikes, out of range of F16 or JF17, there is a complete option of cruise missiles and ALCM, which are stealthy and accurate, no loss of pilots or planes. Once IAF planes strike Inside pakistan, the first weapon of retaliation by pakistan is CM strike on IAF airbases. The IAF planes if escape fr pakistan won't be able to land even.The loss of pilots and planes need to be minimal to have them available to defend own airspace.PN has a huge disadvantage though. PN needs a dedicated long range heavy strike fighter to defend abd carry out its missions in the seas.

2.lets say 140 out of 240 are stationed at china's border.. just give me a true and independently answer that did 50 jf-17s and 79 f-16s will be enough to protect our airspace against 100 su-30MKI, 49 M2k-5, 60 Mig-29 upg ??

how many bvr missiles did a f-16 blk40/50 carry... and how many bvr missiles did a su-30MKI carry??

272 confirmed orders, another 40 follow-on order is being processed for the IAF at the moment on top of that figure.
I know that 272 are on order and are followed by 40 and later all 320 su-30MKI will be upgraded to super su-30MKIs..

but I'm talking about current inventory of su-30mki..

So adding a second seat = adding weight.
Aerial refueling = adding weight.
9 over 7 stations = adding ( weapons or fuel weights? ) weight.
Larger combat radius = hiking engine efficiency, adding fuel ( = adding weight ) or shaving weight off.

to increase range in jf-17 blk2 there should also be increase in fuel tank size to accommodate more fuel..

and to set the 2nd seat in jf-17 blk2 there should also be increase in size to accommodate 2nd seat...

and for more hard point there should also be increase in wing size to adjust 2 more hard point...

Again yes, New World and again it's a matter of offsetting the weight gain by using enough composites.
I'm not exaggerating : carbon fibre is half as elastic and has over twice the tensile strength of steel alloys
but density ( mass at ISO volume ) is one fifth lesser for carbon fiber.

Replacing structural parts not under torsional forces, it can dramatically reduce overall AC weight.
The trick as I said already a few times only lays in using enough to save that weight that you add!

No problem, ask Dassault and choose a B model to save a bit o'cash by hiring your own masseuse and
lugging her around in the back seat.
And don't listen to the Indians, they'll have you believe Dassault will over-charge the gold plating!
