Why Pakistan could not be reformed / fixed so far?

You don’t understand and don’t want to. Just ws t to get the gains of foreign exchsnge and not acknowledge it but don’t change.

When bare minimum foreign exchange will be sent then some smart people will realize, but this is not your problem.
Ok.

.
Conclusion:
As you can see the failure of Pakistan is not economic, judicial or political. It's a state failure. Pakistanis must reform their state structure to fix rest of the mess. Good luck!

Imran Khan already summarized the problem: the only way a corrupt ruler can survive is by making the whole system corrupt.

Pakistan has had 100% self-enriching, corrupt leadership since Jinnah. Every military and civilian ruler since Jinnah was focused only on making themselves and their associates rich. Imran Khan was the firsts hope for change and the US decided this was not acceptable.

P.S. Even Imran Khan was sabotaged by corrupt financial advisors. Instead of collecting income tax and capital gains tax from the rich elite, reducing subsidies to the corrupt (sugar, petroleum, etc.) mafias, his advisors told him to increase sales taxes on the middle class and the poor.

It doesn't make sense because it's not scientific. It's elitist and colonial
Colonial trade between colonies and the colonizer is typically characterized by export of raw resources and import of manufactured goods. South Asian trade with China today is similar to that :undecided:

What is the subsidy / tax breakdown of fuel in Pakistan? I know that Pakistan's petrol prices are cheaper than that in India, but have not seen the breakdown.

I'm skeptical about what the other member said about gas prices bring lower than what it would cost to pump from local gas fields. If locally pumped gas is more expensive than imported gas, then market determinism will naturally not incentivise local extraction. Please note that lower gas prices to industry subsidize the export industry. :pop:
Our local gas prices are something like 10% of what the equivalent LNG prices are. This is how we have spent the last 50 years btw. Petrol prices are somewhat more reasonable but gas prices make no sense.

dude prices were increasing and Pakistani people on this forum in 2020 were calling for the assassination of minsters, IK etc
it's very hard- we have become very lazy- for years we were given cheap gas in every home- other countries used it to industrialize we just cooked rotiyaan
same in every sector- people want the government to give them free healthcare (its happening now but at what cost?.....), elite want cheap imports, that why whatever phase we are going through malls are always full, our economy was tanking and for some reason, our car sales were booming ?
how tf does that happen? everyone is building western-style housing colonies
it seems only way to invest in the country is by buying plots or homes in these housing colonies

its a very weird economy, and makes very little sense
basic food, homeless shelters- that ok, that's needed, I won't complain
Yeah you’re absolutely right- it’s a political economy problem- root cause is Bhuttos socialism paradigm that was adapted at popular level. Now when you tell people that prices have to reflect international prices, they want to riot because apparently that means you must hate poor people.

One thing that the govt ought to do and it is not costing too much apparently is the free healthcare stuff, that is probably good for our HDI which will elevate our human capital, this investment and education can actually help us long term.

I think govt ought to start charging very heavy real estate local taxes like they do in the US to disincentivize investment in non-productive assetts.

I think this is unfair though. India and Bangladesh also have similar issues, corrupt politicians but they develop too. Our country was actually better lead and developed until the 70s, then subpar until the 90s, and then no development post Musharraf.

We can say that corruption is the problem but it’s actually just two parties and how they have gangrened everything. You can be corrupt and still develop but you cannot take it to the level that PPP and PML-N have. Things were not perfect in terms of corruption under Ayyub but we were still developing. Likewise, things are not good (corruption wise) under Hasina in Bangladesh but they are also developing.

And yet, by any standard, Pak Army has been hugely successful in everything it has set its mind to do.
Except for fighting wars and protecting the strategic interest of the nation...

The only thing it has been successful at is co-opting civilian control and supremacy.

Absolutely correct. When I visited Pakistan, prices seemed to totally not reflect international market. Such is the devastating nature of Pakistan's economy that it allows no price discovery. Hence there is always over production and shortage of stuff in the country. Your expert thoughts? @Patriot forever @ziaulislam @Wood @farok84 @blain2
Gas was so cheap that we use to let gas run to save matches..ask your mom she will twll you.

State of Pakistan allowed back to back PPP and PMLN govts between 1988 - 1999 and then again between 2008 - 2018. But it could not tolerate even 5 years of PTI govt and did everything to fail it so that same old PPP and PMLN govt could be reinstated in its 4th year. I wonder why? Why state of Pakistan is in deep love with same old tried and tested parties? Why can't it work with new and better party / parties?
Allow me to say, the Sharif clan has copulated their sons/daughters into every influential family in Punjab.

Punjab province in my opinion is just too big and politically whoever controls Punjab rules over Pakistan. This is quite pathetic.

Solution:
- Break up provinces (into 15-20 provinces)
- Tax non utilized land
- Tax agriculture related income
- Place a limit on land ownership

Before 2007, GDP per capita was higher than that of India. Clearly, the war in Afghanistan had an impact on Pakistan's economic development. Maintaining regional peace and security and developing economy will catch up with other South Asian countries. In the long run, it is best for the state to protect and develop domestic industries and invest in education. One-sided emphasis on the free market economy will only benefit the country in the short term and will harm the country's development potential in the long run.

It’s called “aid dependency” syndrome. Sadly many of our powerbrokers and “elite” are addicted to aid and the idea of having a career break when things go wrong.

The majority of career politicians are white collar criminals openly engaged in criminal activity - financial impropriety and misconduct in public office.

But where there is no accountability there is no governance - it is important to remember that a government always rots from the top down and this can be seen in the attitude civil servants in public office have against tax payers and voters / because they mirror the behaviour and attitude of their superiors.
