Hi,
J8 was never found to be a capable air superiority aircraft---because it was never designed for that job.
Just remember---man behind the machine only goes so far---.
JH-7 actually has many strong points. The WS-9II turbofan despite not being a high bypass but consume much lower fuel compares to other peer. The combat radius of JH-7 is so good that PLAAF never bother to add refuel rod on it. This plane is a huge plane and with 10 hardpoints and many rooms for upgrade of avionics and system. It's agility is infact not as bad as many thing. Definitely non comparable to F-16 but better than Tornado and F-4 phantom.
It's payload is in fact quite decent with 8-9tons and if further upgraded with composite and higher thrust engine. The payload can further increase to 10-12tons.
Hi,
As a Mule is to a race horse---so is the Jh7 is to the F 16---. With modern technology---the BVR function can be easily manipulated and a launch platform built without much fanfare.
The primary flight function of the JH7 was low flight over terrain---. It had nothing to do in competing with the F16 or the Phantom F-4---.
Its design and engine was created to fly low more efficiently than conventional strike aircraft---.
Neither was it designed to take high G loads---( with all the heavy weapons it carried---it could not ) nor was it the most efficient for high altitude flying.
Those who supposedly tested it for high G load were not competent enough to test it for the job it was designed for---because basically they were clueless what this aircraft was for---.
Basically---the F 16 MAFIA in the Paf made sure that no other capable diverse capability aircraft would be inducted in the air force---.
The Japanese were smart people---. They saw the F16 and rejected it---and they designed their own F16---which was 25% larger than the F16---.
It was designed with the condition that it would capable of carrying two Anti Ship missiles in the weight range of 1000 kg each + the fuel tanks---which is basically exactly what the JH7 was designed for---.
It is still the best aircraft for naval strike mission in asia in operation---.
Why did the japanese designed their aircraft larger---because they knew from the gitgo that if there was any war---it would be against a navy ships---and against navy ships best option would be to have a minimum of two HEAVY anti ship missile carried by an individual aircraft---.
Why---because if one aircraft got thru---at least it will have 1 missile to fire if the other failed to launch---.
I have been talking about this scenario for so long---but my pakistani kids have to prove to me that intelligence by-passed them as they have no clue why two missiles on an aircraft are better than one---.
