Why MIG-21 ?

Why isn't 29? thats a primary interceptor aircraft, perhaps serviceability issues?

Amidst all that has happened , one thing that needs to be analyzed is why india sent MIG-21 ?
They have newer more advanced aircrafts which would serve better in an offensive role

A MIG-21 being sent across enemy lines actually points towards operational and procedural problems in the IAF with regards to newer aircraft.

Perhaps a mix of western and Russian airframes is the issue, too many aircraft types in the inventory ?
Buying a high tech aircraft is one thing but using it in an operational area is quite another.

The high end aircraft we know in IAF inventory are the Mirage2000, Su30 and Rafale.
Are none of these ready for the task ?

MiG-21 was part of the strike formation including a Mirage-2000 & a Su-30MKI.

THats nothing unusual ... we also use F7s for interception role ...

What I heard is that since the MIG-29 has two engines, the spool up time is longer than that of a single-engined fighter.

Aggressive mindset in Talks, defensive mindset in combat. Less embarrassment in losing vintage aircraft.

The logic is that, our government didn't want further escalation. Their government didn't want further embarrassment. Win win situation.


We were receiving different shots from different wreckages that morning so they all mixed up. Also don't forget that second plane crashed inside IOK. Even if it was another mig 21 then why India not showing its wreckage? Considering they officially admitted in written statement that 2 of their jets lost in action.

Care to show where GoI or MoD or IAF officially admitted the loss of 2 fighters? One was Mig 21 and another was a Helo Mi17.

One SU-30 pilot died. The other is in Pakistan's custody.

MIG-21 pilot had to be released as, his video was published and Pakistan could not hide that fact.

In case of SU-30 pilot, Pakistan is holding him as a hostage.
