Why is Turkey's economy continuing to grow?

BBC News - Why is Turkey's economy continuing to grow?
The Turkish economy continued to grow in 2011 despite European stagnation.

To some it's known as the 'Turkish miracle'.

With Turkey seemingly taking a bigger role in regional foreign affairs, many are looking to the country as an example of sound economic and political practice.

But with a global trade and service balance in debt to the tune of $70bn, will its economy have to slow this year if Turkey is to balance its books?

Turkey is indeed dependent on the European market given that we export half of our goods there. And we definitely need to balance our export - import! We also need to invest more in the east, both to solve the Kurdish issue and to lessen inequality in GDP.

Sadly, if investers don't have state back up that is kinda impossible. If they don't have any goverment and military backup it is very hard for Bussinessmen/women. My uncle tried to invest in Tunceli and when he refused to pay ''tax'' to those dogs they burnedhis two two commercial truck...

They threaten to kidnap my cousins... Military needed to give them escorts.... It is somewhat more easy, Pkk doesn't use armed militans but now they use children to throw molotovs and rocks...

Edit: Spelling mistake

@Zulkarneyn

NO, NO its the Turkish military doing this, Turkish facist regime is responsible!.. Kurds only want peace we must give them more freedom and own state.. They have the right for self determination.. Do you agree Mr. Enlightened one?

That is why the state needs to extensively focus in the east. It is indeed very difficult for businessmen in those areas, the state (police, military etc) needs to work much closer with the population and prevent such ugly situations as you mention. As long as there is a deep divide between the East and the West we can never be free of the headache PKK is causing us. Socio-economic factors are maybe the most important variable that creates so much problems. The initiatios sstarted by the government (Kurdish state sponsored TV etc.) is a good start, but it is not enough.

Turkey is today the second most populous country in Europe with the youngest population and in ten years or so we will pass Germany (even in Germany, the biggest minority are Turkish around 5 mio - and young!). That means if Turkey can continue to be on the right track concerning the economic developments, it will attract much more students, businessmen etc. since the potential is growing by the day. Turkey will in 30-40 years probably be the wealthiest country in Middle East (which it already is) and Europe (if we don't count Russia). Therefore Turkey will play a much bigger role in the near future (our role is already being acknowledged).

My point is, if we as a country can learn to live in peace with each other no matter religious belief or ethnicity we will outmatch EU and be the new center of attention on how to cope with future difficulties. But firstly we need to get rid of our own problems (PKK, neighbours like Syria, Armenia and Iraq). That is why the region plays an uttermost importance for the development. Even though tides are pretty high in Syria, Iraq and Greece the zero-problem foreign policy is definately a step in the right direction . Because we can't be a regional power without developing friendly ties with our neighbours.

True, but you have to consider the effect of the economic recession.
