What's new

Why is the name of Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Bin Al-Saud written upon the covering of Ka'aba?

This kind of sentences are imprinted on all kinds of religious work that is conducted under the Saudi religious ministry. Yes, it does mention the name of the current Saudi king.

Below you can see the same kind of sentence imprinted on the bottom page of the Quran printed by Saudi religious ministry under King Fahad. It is more of a tradition than anything else nothing related to politics.

These copies of the Quran are completely free to everyone and you can get them religious ministries offices with the option of translation in almost all major languages.

Why should a human's name be on the sacred ka'aba? The OP's question is valid. To dismiss this as tradition is irrelevant. It is an incorrect tradition in that case. And the OP's complaint isn't about "politics" - it's about religious dogma being applied correctly.

I don't want any Saudi king's name anywhere near the ka'aba.

. .
Agreed , no kings name or any other name should be on Kaaba. This is house god, doesn't need name plate of any human being. Do it silently and pray to Allah accept it.

The following is a screen grab from the Makkah Live channel on YouTube. If you see the red rectangle, it says in Arabic:

Hazihil kiswatu sana'aah fil Makkah tal Mukarramah wa hudan ha lil Ka'aba tul Musharrafah Khaadim Al Haramain Ash Sharifain Salman Bin 'Abdul 'Aziz Bin Al Saud Taqabbal Allahu Minhu sanh 1440H

(This cover has been crafted in Holy Mecca and gifted for Ka'aba Musharrafah by the Servant of Haramain Ash Sharifain Salman Bin 'Abdul 'Aziz Bin Al Saud May Allah Accept from him Year 1440 Hijrah)

This is the place towards which Muslims direct themselves for prayers from around the world and it is supposed to be selected only for Greatness of Allah the Almighty. Why is the name of an ordinary human being written here? What do religious scholars have to say about this?

NOTE: Post edited to add the year at the end of the text in both Arabic and English.
Arabized South Asian

I guess people are offended why its written in Arabic..
dear bedou, there would have been no issue had there been anything respectable written in english..

We should also bring back the idols and plant them inside and all around our box; it’s within our ancient heritage and whoever disagrees can simply beat it;;
you mean idols of the godesses your ancestors worshiped .uzzah , mannat , lat..
tell me arabs do it today as well?

No one will understand the sarcasm behind the post.
Sorry, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had broken all the idols that manifested "nafsi" and the keys Saudi Arab holds is guarded by angels from heaven. Don't worry, even you cannot do anything about it.
Dear op, when Allah subhawatala has purified the house of kaaba from idols then why are you so much worried. Don't worry, Saudi Arabs are hosting this nicely for decades and they will not mix anything with the purity of harem. On contrary to that the paper slips some hajis carry and the ridiculous attempts of dropping them either in holy house and in Prophet Muhammad's mosque is Madina is far more dangerous than anything else.

Enjoy the keys!

I am not a scholar but I think that this is an Islamic tradition that every temporary Custodian of the Holy Sites have practiced past and present. It is not something that I have noticed before/put emphasis on but I understand why it could be controversial.

I suggest asking well-known Islamic scholars who will be able to answer such questions in detail on well-known websites. I encourage you to contact scholars in KSA as well and institutions. For instance the Islamic University of Madinah.

See this reply for all it is worth in the meantime:

Q-1: IT SEEMS THAT THE KING OF SAUDI ARABIA`S NAME IS ENGRAVED ON THE DOOR OF KAABA AND A PHOTOGRAPH WAS SHOWN TO ME,BUT I WAS UNABLE TO READ IT DUE TO THE ARABIC CALIGRAPHY.IS IT BECAUSE THE KING IS THE CUSTODIAN OF THE TWO HOLY MOSQUES,A RITUAL TO DO SO FROM EARLIER DAYS OR IS IT REALLY WRONG TO DO ITAND IS HARAM.PLEASE ENLIGHTEN US ON THIS.

It is indeed true that the name of some of the kings of Saudi Arabia are indeed engraved on the bottom part of the main door of the Holy Kaaba. One cannot say doing such a thing is haraam or forbidden, as there is no such specific restriction prescribed in the Quran or the Sunnah. Beloved brother, these people and their families have declared themselves to be the custodians of the Holy Mosque, they build and maintain it to the best of their ability, and since they are kings of this world, for a time period decreed, they may do as they please!

The Holy Kaaba will remain the Holy Kaaba and the Sacred House of the Lord of the Worlds; whether one who builds and maintains it writes his name on it or not! If the people who built it wish that their name should be remembered by fellow man and history, they will obviously make sure that their name is engraved on it; and if they wish to get their reward from The One and Only King of kings, whether they write their names on it or not, they will have their due reward from Him.

Although I am not a scholar, my humble opinion, makes me inclined to your viewpoint but I don't think it is haram at all.

Speaking about keys (brother, I agree with everything you wrote earlier, so I have not replied again, also because I was busy updating 2 threads and now I saw this thread, just wanted to give you a notice instead of writing a short reply - I might write a long reply tomorrow as it is very late but the unnatural coronavirus times have paralyzed normal life) this video might interest people.

It contains English subtitles.

Excellent response, when scholars are there then why do anyone would have a problem. Infact Saudi Arab is the only country that is still breathable and where sharia law is properly applied. Specially the sites of Mecca and Madina are highly holy places. The people are I guess more scared because of some disinformation being spread against by very specific handles we know.
Hence, we need to make sure to take guidance from scholars in this regard and in every walk of life:)
I hope the reference posted above now satisfies all the posters!
