Money doesn't buy you happiness. India is one of the wealthiest countries in the world but most of the wealth is held by a minority. There are a lot of people in India who don't have enough. I also think those who do (the emerging middle class), they work VERY hard for it. There is a lot of pressure to have things, to have the best grades etc. It is the same in a lot of countries, but I think with India you have a mixture of people buying into commercialism and the environmental conditions to support that.
