Why Indians hate money ?

I was watching some show some months back and in that show prasoon joshi said something that made an impact on me to seriously think about,He said Indians hate money psychology although they may not say it in open.

He says look the the songs we love "tu paisa paisa karti he..." etc ,look at the leaders we love .

I went on thinking and realized he was quiet correct ,whenever somebody want to criticize some other famous guy he quickly shout "look how much money he has" in a derogatory manner .

I mean if somebody is rich ,he must be a bad guy,that's our physcology !

I dont know whether these are remnants of socialist era or the philosophies which our ancestors wrote in ancient times .

Please discuss !

I don't think so the habit of buying gold for the bride would not have happened otherwise....

How do you know someone has got "ill" money ? I've seen most people think somebody is bad because he is rich and that's it.

Ok lets say i don't know some MLA which is very new and first timer candidate in my constituency ,people say ohh look he is wealthy...

This is not just limited to India.

Schopenhauer and Nietzsche have written a critique of classical morality calling it a morality of slaves.He was specifically criticizing Christianity whose morality has evolved when most of it's followers were Roman slaves, but it is equally applicable to religion derived for Christianity like Islam and popular (vedanta school, advaitya philosophy) Hinduism compared to polytheistic pantheons of old religions.

Thus the hatred for material wealth forms part of basic moral codes in which has evolved from the fact that majority of members of all popular religions ( compared to older ones which were followed by elites ) have lacked material wealth when moral structure of most of the popular religions was in formative stage and belittling wealth and wealthy was only defense mechanism available to them. These values have been passed down the generations by socialization and have become ingrained in Psyche.

While in India, this abhorrence is of epic proportion, this sort of abhorrence could be seen in catholic countries in varying degree.



One of the negative effect of this internalized abhorrence to material wealth is repression and development of hypocrisy which is a factor in rampant corruption. People need wealth to function and denial usually means reduction in efficiency or inability to function. The repression of a genuine need to become rich manifest itself in hoarding behavior in private where social mores are not applicable.This is a classical example of compensatory behavior.

Repression of genuine need for wealth leads to moral corruption. This is the reason that i have no respect for Gandhi and despise Kejariwal. In diorama of their universe, poverty is synonymous with nobility while anyone who has lived in both could tell you that their is no nobility in poverty.

kuch bhi kaho.....gussa toh aata hai kabhi kabhi..
me working 60+ hrs weekly for 50k.....n a matric fail bully(same age) in my neighbourhood built a marble palace n has 3 cars,,he is a class 1 contractor,married,2 children.......waah re duniya...laazawab corruption...

i agree with u to an extent.even our govt policies reflect this.giving freebies to the poor is accepted but over taxing the ultra rich is also accepted.and when you give concessions to the rich then there will be out roar in the society.probably the wide margin of unequal distribution of wealth is a reason for this.rather than taking money from the rich and giving it to the poor for free the system should be modified in such a way that the money must be diverted before going to the rich to being creating sufficient assets to the poor so that they become self reliant.

dont blame everything on corruption.while i agree with u that he might be involved in corruption some time or some where...he got rich because he took risk and tried to become a business man rather than becoming an employee and be safe..ur safe but he is not safe even though hes rich.who knows in 3 months he might end up on a road and who knows in 3 months he might buy 3 more houses like that...thats the risk he was willing to take.we indians always try to play safe.most of our parents encourage us to become doctors or lawyers or engineers but rarely do they want us to do business..probably thats one of the reasons why china is surging ahead of us.perhaps they are willing to take more risk!

A lot in my opinion was ingrained into our psych during the 60-80 where ever movie showed the bad guy being rich and the poor guy the hero. also the middle class of those days was not that affluent as they are today , so people went with the notion if he had money he got it through bad means.
this all changed in the 90 where people realized that due to the economy opening up people had more money , suddenly having things was cool and not considered bad.

But even today people uses "look at his lifestyle" and talk negatively about thing. case and point is arvind kejriwal keep harping about how Delhi CM are only sitting the their AC offices.
Now if one is to look at this rationally we have to agree that no one puts on an AC during winter, and anyone who lives in delhi know that without an AC its unbearable in May and June. So should a person of the CM stature not use AC ? especially while most middle class houses use them now a days!!!
Its all a matter of perception and how you wish to create hatred towards someone. plus in India we have this glee while we talk bad about people who are in larger (superior) positions then us.

Tall poppy syndrome. We have that in New Zealand as well.

Somehow Indians attach purity to poverty and a rural lifestyle and corruption to urban lifestyle.

A sort of Filmi Gandhianism i think.
