An interesting article leading to insight on India's need to build a Blue water navy

India’s Blue-Water Navy – Staredown in Bay of Bengal, 1971
By Hans Johnson

No one envied Captain Swaraj Prakash in December 1971. Prakash commanded India’s sole aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, which weighed just 20,000 tons. His opponent: US Navy Task Force 74 led by the USS Enterprise, weighing in at 95,000 tons. Enterprise was also battle-hardened from years of combat off the coast of Vietnam. How did Prakash find himself in such an unenviable position?

India and Pakistan had been at each other’s throat since independence from Great Britain in 1947. At that time, the Indian Subcontinent was partitioned into the two nations. Pakistan consisted of West and East Pakistan, with India in the middle.
They simply did not get along and fought a border war in 1965. West Pakistan traditionally dominated East Pakistan. That ended in 1971 when East Pakistan declared independence and renamed itself Bangladesh.

The West Pakistan Army brutally put down the independence movement and millions of refugees streamed into India. Tensions rose. Pakistan gambled and launched a pre-emptive air strike on India. War broke out and India invaded East Pakistan. In the Bay of Bengal, the Vikrant led a blockade imposed against East Pakistan.

Few neutrals existed during the Cold War. The Subcontinent was no different. India aligned with the Soviet Union. Pakistan was an ally of the United States.

Then–US President Richard Nixon saw the world through a balance of power and prestige in international relations. He feared Indian dominance of the region and tried diplomatically to stop India’s advance through a ceasefire.

When that failed, he turned toward military pressure. Nixon ordered Task Force 74 to the Bay of Bengal, setting the stage for a potential showdown between Captain Prakesh’s Vikrant and the Enterprise.

That bout never occurred. West Pakistan forces in Bangladesh surrendered on December 16. Task Force 74 moved off.

Had Nixon moved too slowly? Was he only bluffing? Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger said, "Everyone knows how all this will come out, and everyone knows that India will ultimately occupy East Pakistan. We must therefore make clear our position relative to our greater strategy."

India could never be sure of Nixon’s intentions but they had certainly witnessed his capabilities. They did not like the fact that a foreign navy had intervened in waters that close to India.

Even with an aircraft carrier, India was a coastal navy in 1971. For India’s politicians this simply would not do. From now on, India must have a blue water navy. Her navy would dominate waters around India with strong forces operating well off her coasts.

* * *

The Indian Navy has progressed over the last four decades. It conducts operations far from India with anti-piracy patrols off Somalia. Indian frigates have killed a number of pirates and captured their vessels. India has also deployed maritime patrol aircraft to the distant Seychelles Islands. Even further afield, India dispatched vessels to Libya in February to evacuate Indian nationals.

India is also embarked on a major expansion of her fleet. The 1971-era Vikrant is long gone, but India is building a new Vikrant twice as large along with a sister ship. India has purchased an ex-Russian aircraft carrier along with MiG-29s to fly from it.

The program in submarines is just as ambitious. An ex-Russian Akula II nuclear attack submarine has just been leased. The first of six French Scropene submarines will start joining the fleet in 2015.

Numerous frigates and corvettes are also being built in India. She will replace her aging maritime aircraft with American P-8s.

A lot has changed since 1971. India and Pakistan still don’t get along, but India and the United States are friends. The rise of China, particularly Chinese desire for a blue-water navy, causes concern from the Indian Navy. But India seems determined that the future captains of the INS Vikrant are a much formidable opponent against anyone challenging India.

good article but right now india should lay emphasis in its submarine fleet. we need to expand our fleet to atleast 30 mordern diesel sub and 10 nuclear ssbn.

Well Submarines can only expand blue water capabilities up to a limit. While a nuclear submarine may stay submerged for days on end, the crew would need a foreign port or a carrier to resupply for food and essentials.
Having said that, development of the Arihant class and induction of Akula class subs are a positive.

we dont need 3 aircraft carriers. two are enough. but they should be lethal. IC 1 weighs 36,500 tons according to vijendar kaul.

i think IC 2 will weigh 50,000 tons at least. but she wont be in water for at least a decade. so for foreseeable future we will have IC 1 and ADMIRAL GORSHKOV.

we must have at least 20 modern subs and 3 nuclear subs. some people will say this number is not enough but we cant spend too much on navy. lets think about our economy also.

so total strength of navy in 2020 according to me>

IC 1

ADMIRAL GORSHKOV

20 diesel subs

2 SSN and 1 SSBN

10 destroyers

25 frigates

12 ASW aircrafts

actually we need atleast 4 carriers. see two should be on active duty and the other two should be on port. when the other two comes for maintenence these two can take thier place, this way we would have two active cbg 365 X 24 X 7.

Another interesting reports on what happend back then and the following part is quiet interesting as well:

Cold War Games

...As a postscript to this anecdote, soon after the victory of the Indian Armed Forces, one of the foreign celebrities that visited India was the renowned naval leader Admiral S.G. Gorshkov, Chief of the Soviet Navy. During his visit to Bombay he came onboard INS Vikrant. I had known the Admiral well earlier during my tenure in Moscow as the Indian Naval Attaché. The Admiral congratulated me and asked, "Were you worried about a battle against the American carrier?" He answered himself: "Well, you had no reason to be worried, as I had a Soviet nuclear submarine trailing the American task force all the way into the Indian Ocean."

P.S. the forum seems to delete BR (full form) out of the link, so add it between http://www. and /NAVY.

Currently Our Navy is Capable of Operating across the Deep water of Indian ocean \

We Have Ships DePloyed Till Mozambique coast , From East Near Malacca Strait at Andaman [Bay of Bengal Region ] to West at Gulf for Piracy Missions.

We Have Naval Stations At Seychells , Madagascar , Mauritius and Maldives.

We will have Operational Joint command Base at Andamans and Lakshadweep Along with A base At ' Karwar '

But We are Far away from Called ' Blue - Water Navy '

We Need Atleast Two Operating CBG's

Three Deployed Carriers - One at West Coast , One At East And One At Indian Ocean Region.

For Blue water Navy , We Need AC,SSBN and SSN's

We Have Vikramaditya and Vikrant [IAC 1] coming By 2014, IAC -2 will be Under Construction then.
We Have Arihant SSBN's under Construction Along with Planned SSN's

By 2020 , we will Have Potential Blue water Navy , With Operational CBG ....

India Will Build More Than 100 Vessels for Navy in This Decade :smitten:

we are a 1.53 trillion dollar economy not 18 trillion dollar.

Maybe we should build some unmanned underwater ballistic missile subs.

No need to make it man rated with human support systems such as food, water, sleeping places and Toilets. Just link it's instruments to the sub trainer modules and let it sleep on the ocean floor.

What do you think? Russians are expert at unmanned devices ex. Lunar Khod

Vikramaditya + IAC 1 + IAC 2 will be operational within this decade.. IAC 3 is in a cenception Phase..
IAC1 will be 40000 ton & 65000 ton IAC 2.

India precisely needs atleast 10 Nuke Subs and 20-30 Diesel-electric subs..

The Other counts are also needed to be increased to become a true Blue Navy..

Unmanned SSBN 's :what: ?
What are You talking About Man ?

Well by current projections Indian Carrier count (3) would be second only to USA (11).
Nirvana: Just a perspective. Carriers are extremely expensive. By our current plans we would have the most carriers outside the US. But having built a nuclear power station for a submarine, I am sure there would be some minds working on a nuclear powered Carrier.

Never heard of Lunar Khod. But India has an unmanned submarine. Don't have a clue if there are plans to build one big enough to carry ballistic missiles. I doubt it though. Easy to jam signals/communication between sub and operator. Also the signals will be difficult to relay in deep Ocean conditions. Not to mention it could help track down the submarine. A submarine that's been spotted is as good as dead.

India tests unmanned underwater vehicle

Banglorte: India successfully tested the unmanned submarine developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle)-150 built by the engineers of Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), in Durgapur , West Bengal with the assistance of DRDO was brought to Idukki dam in Kerala for the test.

The vehicle which can move under water will map the sea bed and observe underwater movements. It is controlled

by wireless navigational instruments from land. Idukki dam was selected for the fresh water test because there was a naval institution working nearby and because Idukki was the deepest reservoir in India. AUV-150's ocean test will be carried out later.

The AUV-150 will be used as a tool for coastal security operations. The device which measures 4.8 metres in lenghth and weighs 490 kg . This unmanned vehicle operates on battery. It was brought to Kulamav dam in a container from Durgapur.

The U S, Russia, Germany, Australia, Japan and South Korea are other countries which have unmanned underwater vehicles.

Yes we do need only two AC's but to keep both of them in water at all time a third standby AC would be required.
