Why India must support Nasheed in Maldives row

We should not get involved in the internal affairs of other nations. The golden rule in foreign policy is "Don't do to other nations what we don't want to have them do to us" . My point is, if another country does to us what we do others, we’re not going to like it very much. If we had not intervened in sri lanka for IPKF, those soldiers who died in IPKF operations would have been still alive today. Lets not forget that sad episode and get ourselves into trouble again.

Looks it another POV....if we wholeheartedly supported the LTTE, then Sri Lanka and Maldives whould under our control

what US has to do with that ?

Its internal matter of Maldives why India at official level has to poke its nose

Its law. If a person chose to seek asylum in Indian embassy , how does it becomes interference. What u said might have been true, if India had sent troops after nasheed ouster.
We must support Nasheed strongly

In your POV will it be ok for you if USA and britain start supporting NE seperatist groups in India?. Will you feel good about it. We should not do to other nations what we don't want to have them do to us. We should follow principles and that will give the best results for India. If we had supported LTTE how many soldiers would have to lose their life for it, which has nothing to do with our national security.

The only purpose of existence of Indian armed forces is to protect people of India from external and domestic threats. It exists for no other purpose.

Yeh but we cannot predict where threats will come from and when. LTTE could have been used to undue what the British did to us. It could could have been used to unite all of us.

Thats why we have our armed forces in our country , to face any threats that may come our way. If we face a security threat from either LTTE or from Sri Lanka Govt, we can take care of that. But there was no threat to us when we initiated IPKF

Easy to think such but you are overlooking many other unseen factors that come into play. IPKF was a blunder on our part. WHy did Rajiv decide so?

He decided so because he didn't understand. Believe me, my friend if we follow principles, we will be safe and secure and our economy will be much better.

Male: Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed left the Indian High Commission on Saturday, 11 days after he sought refuge following an arrest warrant against him in a court case.

A large number of his supporters gathered outside the Indian chancery to greet Nasheed as he left the premises.

Nasheed entered the High Commission on 13 February when an arrest warrant was issued after he failed to attend court for what he called a politically-motivated trial aimed at disqualifying him from the presidential election slated for 7 September.

Nasheed walked out of the mission at 4:15 pm (IST) after which India said it hoped that with this development the former President will again resume his social and political life.

“We welcome this development,” President Mohamed Waheed’s Press Secretary Masood Imad told PTI in Male adding there was no arrest warrant against Nasheed at the moment.

However, he also added that “I am happy that the longest meeting in world has ended. We were formally told by the High Commission on the first day that Nasheed had come into the Mission for a meeting and will be out once it is over.”

His party claimed that the case was politically motivated and designed to disqualify him from taking part in September Presidential polls.

“It will be recalled that the former President had entered the Indian Mission in Male on 13 February 2013 on his own volition and had similarly decided to leave on his own.

“It is hoped that with this development the former President will again resume his social and political life,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement in New Delhi.

The breakthrough came after a high-level MEA team led by Joint Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla was sent to Maldives where it held a series of meetings with senior government ministers and various other stakeholders.

“The Government of India wishes to thank all those who have cooperated in these efforts, the MEA statement said.

It said that India has been working closely with the Government and other relevant stakeholders in Maldives to strengthen the democratic framework of the country.

India has maintained broad based contacts with all political parties and democratic institutions in Maldives without interfering in its internal affairs.

“The Government of India urges all parties to maintain peace and calm and hopes to continue its positive engagement in the spirit of the close and friendly relations between the two countries,” it said.

The official statement also referred to remarks by Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid to his Maldivian counterpart that India has traditional and age old ties of friendship and cooperation with Maldives.

India would be happy to support all efforts to create favourable conditions for free, fair, credible and inclusive Presidential elections in September 2013 that can contribute to durable peace, stability and prosperity in Maldives and the region, it added.

Seems Nahseed might get into power again after elections and current people into power are trying their best to stop him contesting elections. :pop:
