To understand that you have to go back to history of Iran.
Before 1979 Iran was under the rule of a US supported King aka Shah, much like the current Gulf monarchies.

The Shah was extremely corrupt, again much like current Gulf monarchs.An example of this is that he used to fly his breakfast from his favorite restaurant in Paris everyday using a high speed plane.This guy would put our Gandhis to shame.

So this Shah gave away rights to drill Iranian oil to US companies at throw away prices in return for US supporting his corrupt regime.

At this time Iran and Israel were good friends since both were in US camp.

Take the china - russia gas deal. China tried for years to get this contract under this ridicolous low price and russia did always denie to sign the contract. Now under western sanctions Putin signed it. The deal is so unfortunate for russia, that it even pays money to deliver gas to China.
