In the early 16th century Rana Sanga of the Mewar Dynasty and Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagar Empire
were the most powerful rulers of whole India before the arrival of Babur.
Rana Sanga defeated the Sultans of Malwa, Gujarat and even the Sultan of Delhi Lodhi but instead of
annexing these kingdoms he restored their kingdoms.
Krishnadevaraya defeated the Sultans of Bijapur, Golconda and Bahmani but after his victories he
restored the kingdoms of the Sultans.
Why didn't Rana Sanga and Krishnadevaraya try to expand their territories like the ancient Gupta
and Maurya rulers or the medieval Mughal and Maratha rulers.

Because they were weak in their minds.

Having a powerful army and gifted generals can win a day but is no sure way to consolidate a victory. To do that you need to have the decisiveness of a Shivaji or Ghouri. If you keep your enemy alive, he will and should attack you again.

They were also complacent - a fatal mistake when dealing with invaders.

Baat to sahi hai
Btw I have a feeling this is gonna turn into a flame war

So he could use them later on against his enemies.

true! Infact Rana Sanga invited Babur to Lodi Rulers of Delhi! History is not Black and white,, its all grey. No me , you and they.

Personal interest trumps nationality or religion.

I think Rajput's never had the aptitude to become Empire Builders. The hated each other's clan so much and had so many petty feuds that anyone with a pack of horses could defeat them just by placating rival clan. An example of that would be alliance of jaichand with Mohd Ghori against prithviraj.
There is no proof that Jaichand of the Gahadvala Dynasty ever allied with Ghori. The rulers of the Gahadvala Dynasty
successfully protected northern India against the Turkic invaders of the Ghaznavid kingdom in the early 12th century.
Govindachandra Gahadvala was an ancestor of Jaichand and repeatedly defeated the Ghaznavid Turks in the early
12th century and became famous as the protector of Varanasi against the Turks.

True, may be he did not ally with the invader. But he did not swallow his pride (or ego) and did not fight alongside Prithvi. :disagree:

Gaining and keeping hold of territories are two very different things.

Vijayanagara Empire is a rich one and they have massive army, They also have many enemies. Krishnadevaraya is a decisive.
Every successful King/Emperor is a decisive one reason why they are into history books.

Rana sanga was not in position to conquer Lodhi empire which stretched from punjab to bengal. His couldnt expand beyond rajasthan.
Lodhis were plagued by civil war, thousands of afghans had died in the internal conflicts. Power of Afghans lied in their tribes and its chiefs, ibrahim lodhi had issues with every one. This infights in lodhis favoured rana sanga. But still ibrahim lodhi had enough military resources to defend delhi and launch offensive on mewar.
Note that mahmud lodhi and his forces joined hands with rana sanga in 1527 against babur.

Krishnadevaraya did bring the Sultans he defeated under him, to whom they paid loyalties. I guess he should have removed them from power, and installed his own politicians there. There must have been some politics behind the decision.
Later after him, these states united to defeat the great empire.
