What's new

Why did Pakistan send 8 acquired US Naval Frigates back?

Your Navy Leadership were Smart-- They had will to Hold these Frigates as Collateral.

But the Ordinance and Engineering FOCs would have Highlighted who will give Weapons to fire when existing store is Over ??

Engineering FOC who have Highlighted these Matured Vats of Whisky would need Lots of Care as were in 3rd Decade
What is the Point in Increasing Cost Keeping a White Elephant.....

Trump Card - Pakistan should have Held Balls of Yanks by Saying, we are giving them to China or Return our Money.
I am certain Zardari would have done some fingering too ?

You're asking too much of Pakistani politicians sir, especially Mr.10%

What did us did against india on her nuclear program nothing

Well during the 90's India did not do much business with USA anyways their main trading partner was Russia and they normally did trading with Middle east which they have expended so they were not much effected with any sanctions

It is only Pakistan who have depended on USA since 60's and later obviously left on its own due to sanctions and more disrespect over time

India does all mechanical work inside India (Engine - Auto/Cars - Electronics - Medicine companies etc), they have a 1 Billion people to sell the items to

Pakistan on other hand , gave up our industry to Mehran Suzuki and over reliance on purchased goods

We did not get 1 single piece of good "stuff" beyond the F16 in 80's when it was a top commodity - now we can't even get that or that 1 Terbella dam project in 60's worth mentioning which made a huge economic impact in 1960's

What was the next meaningful contribution ? OHP frigate perhaps - Yes the F16 upgrade was a decent item attained but even so .... we suffered the most due to 90's sanctions and understandingly as it was matter of national security for us

Look at the Helicopter saga !!! we can't even make it locally in Pakistan , our Anti Terror operations would have been 1000% more efficient had we manufactured our own Helicopter in capacity of 1000 copters for Military usage

Body we will make and engine will come from Dada?

The Gearing class DDGs were acquired through FMS.
Brooke & Garcia's were acquired through a lease contract. They all were sent back after the lease expired.

The Gearing class DDGs served PN well after being modified extensively.

.
Was sent back due to the Pressler embargo. Real question is why did Pakistan not keep these ships as collateral for the embargoed F-16s?

the ships would be useless with American spare parts. Why keep something you cannot operate ? the ships were outdated compared to the Indian warships

Gearing class DDG renamed Tughril for PN and then Nazim for PMSA had capability to house a drone helicopter QH-50 DASH, which was capable of firing torpedos but I doubt that it saw service in PN on PNS Tughril.

Likely fund crunch as funds were being spent on F-16s for PAF, so Lease was the only good logical option at that time for the 'red headed step child ( PN. )' Also, likely PN was hoping that USN / USA Gov't will offer them to PN at free of charge at the end of the lease as they be just rusting in some junk yard taking up berths. These were some good Anti Submarine Ships of there time, good thing to take from all this is that PN learnt the lesson rather well then the other two services.

PS: Gearing were WW-II era ships, doubt US much cared if the PN kept them or not, were the other 8 were Cold War era ships designed to hunt the Ruskie Subs.

.
May be not sea worthy any more or expensive to run them for another cycle

.
Pakistan did got them , correct.
i do not actually know the reason for this but i am guessing that they were not leased as with frigate but probably bought or accepted in aid , if this true than US had no claim over them as with frigate whose lease was cancelled
but i repeat i dont know much about them destroyers.
leased... never held them... return when lease was not renewed..

Sepoys dare not invite the ire of their masters.

That would require huge balls of steel - and our steel mills is closed for exactly 30 years

We had benazir at that time and she was a women (My comment may appear sexist ) but we lacked a good strong leader in government is what I mean to say

Benazir Bhutto was the 11th and 13th Prime Minister of Pakistan
  • Serving in office 1988–1990
  • Serving in office 1993–1996.
  • 100% no balls - Was busy fighting corruption charges

We also had this guy -

Nawaz shairf. A veteran politician and industrialist, he previously
  • Served as Prime Minister from November 1990 to July 1993
  • Served as Prime Minister from February 1997 to October 1999.
  • His balls of steal were in offshore locker room

He was busy making offshore , companies during 90s to move his funds over as exposed by Panama Leaks. He was not bothered about "ships" - "Ships, what ships? he said; All I see is offshore accounts, quickly tell me about my money transfer."

Had we not "rented and returned the ships" today we might have been operating 20-25 ships

Guess who is in Command again ? Nawaz "The Reek" Sharif

He can't even articulate an idea , he reads his lines from a paper clip like a 7 year old in school
Does anyone thinks for a moment this man can demand the ships , as compensation for F16

Bablu here was 10 year old and he was 10-20 Million owner of 2-3 offshore companies
He was also busy with money making instead of doing his home work , for grade 5

What about holier than holy neutrals, couldn't they have looked our for their own interest at least, the hell with rest of the country.

It is not just because of not taking benefit from USA but also due to local culture.

Pakistanis are far more lazy than Indians in all honesty. I am not talking of all but the majority. Look at most businesses in Paksitan, they are import reliant, and use the simple model of importing items in bulk to sell locally at a mark up.

The items that are locally manufactered in Pakistan are none value added items ie textiles, leather goods, surgical instruments, sports matierials, assembled vehicles, etc... very little value added goods are manufactered in Pakistan. India had local industry to take the lead, we have yet to see a resemblence of Tatas or Ambanis.

Had Pakistan not nationalized its industries in the 70s due to bhutto and had we privitized state own companies to local pakistani businessmen in the early 2000s we would have seen our fords and rockefellers but unfortunately our institutions have done everything in their power to destroy business/industries and enrich the land owning fouj and feudals. Sad truth.

Musharaf had sellers for Pak Steel mills at a very good costs, justice sala chaudhry sidelined the deal due to stated "Corruption" since then this thief CJP has cost Pakistan over 10bn USD, why is he not punished? and guess what his cousin is the current criminal interior minister AKA Rana Sanuallah :D bought in by the Fouj to protect their land holdings and business interest. In summary Pakistan is one of the few poor nations in the world that subsidizes the elite rich!!!

This is the sad state of our affairs today. 90% of our financial problems could be resolved tomorrow by implementing 3-4 major economic policy changes-

1. Get rid of ALL state subsidies, will save us close to 8 BN USD annually
2. Privitize majority of state own companies such as PSM, PIA, KEC, ETC via a firesale... will save close to 5 bn USD annually
3. Cut all retirement/pension benefits to every soilder with the rank of major or higher, including to ex personel. We will only reward our army when they achieve victory on the battle field.
4. Privitize ALL army own companies, these entities are actually very profitable and could be sold at a high mark up. The funds could be used to invest in infrastructure/schools/hospitals. This includes fauji cement, fauji fertilizers, etc... When our people are hungry who are these neutrals that will suck our nations blood???

Neither the STATE NOR THE ARMY has any business in running companies. They should focus on their jobs which is governing and security! These solutions will save Pakistan over 12+bn Annually , funds that could be used to help the poor. Not just that but these local companies will be sold off to LOCAL PAKISTANI BUSINESSES and financed via LOCAL Paksitani state banks. In summary we will self industrialize our own nation while at the same time saving enough money to build the infrastructure for 1 CPEC every 3 years if we wanted!

They were on lease Gearing and Brooke class. After the sanctions USA 🇺🇸 asked for their return. Old story. In response PN bought the Type 21 from the UK 🇬🇧 used ones which was another blunder.

Correction Brooke and Garcia class

.
The PN leased them as an interim measure ahead of ordering new built frigates. Around this time the PN was speaking to the UK for 3 Type 23s.
