He was one of leading architect of PAF modernisation which results 1965 dramatic performance of PAF.

There were many reasons for modernization of PAF and they had nothing to do with Asghar Khan who became beneficiary of all that. The biggest reason of PAF success was because of the seed of Americanization which came about thru the policies of Liaqat Ali Khan. Pakistan became member of SEATO and CENTO which brought American F-86's and American Training. That was the key reason why PAF out-performed IAF inspite of Inferior numbers quantitatively. IAF had superior aircraft Hunter but Indians did not train as much as PAF pilots did ( Americans were big on training and consequently PAF learnt to rely on intensified training regime ).

Of Course Asghar Khan was a great Manager and managed PAF affairs very well. But that did not make him a great General.
A great General must have Charisma and be able to earn the respect of his men and lead them. Asghar Khan did not have those qualities that one needs to be a great General.
