The Umayyad dynasty like all the other Arab Caliphates (Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Famitid) was founded and ruled by Hijazi Arabs from modern day KSA. The Umayyad Caliphate was the biggest empire the word had ever seen at that time and is the 5 biggest empire in history.

The Umayyad Caliphate like all the other Arab Calipahtes were ruled by Arab Hijazi Caliphs and the Arab elite.

When the Abbasids took the power in 750, who themselves were from Hijaz and belonged to the Quraysh tribe as well, the Umayyads "only" managed to keep control of Al-Andalus (Iberia) and ruled most of it for 800 years or so.
