Republic of India is already a powerful nation because of the acheivements made within some decades.

Economic wise, military wise and even in space and Nuclear sectors.

That's because we are one of the only powers in the world that is willing to challenge the uni-polar world system dominated by the sole superpower USA.

And Russia knows that. They saw us ignoring every decree from America, whether it comes to the Yuan, the AIIB, the SCO, island building, hacking, etc.

India also wants to chart their own path (India applied to join both the SCO and the AIIB) but currently India does share geopolitical aims with the sole superpower USA. Especially when it comes to China.

Russia of course is not very happy to see defense cooperation between India and the USA.

When push comes to shove, it seems India tends to be more aligned with the Western world. Russia knows that they can't expect India to take a stand against the West, for the foreseeable future.

China is rich. They can do what the second largest economy can do. That being said, India has a exclusive relationship with Russia that China does not have with anyone.
The Russians may need Chinese money, but they are not found of the CCP buying too many assets in Russia.
A lot of Russian labs/facilities of strategic value are running on rupees.
This US-India thing, is NOT an alliance. But it is move to balance power in Asia and Japan, and many ASEAN countries want to see a strong India.

The is no rivalry between US-China.Public display of rivalary suits both countries

1) China can grab more land and Sea in SCS

2) China could get better deals with Russia in Oil, Gas & Defence

3) US could sell more Defence Equipment to ASEAN countries

4) China could contain India in South Asia

5) US could sell more defence deals to India

Trouble started only when china started moving into indian territory. If india had realized that they will suffer same fate as tibet they would have been better off. If india wanted to attack they would have been well prepared and would not be sending an half clothed under equipped military.

I pity for those underequiped Indian soilders. A friend of mine often heard stories about that war from his dad who was a division commander that participated the war. He mentioned that those Indian soldiers barely had enough clothes and their weapons were WWII class. Still, despite the disagreement between two countries, Nehru's resistance to continuous political negotiation made this border quarrel into a full frontal military confrontation.
