Where are we going wrong??

Since the creation of Republic of India in 1950 we have never had any easy relations with any of our neighbours. Lets not go before the 90s but talking of the present situation

Nepal:
Accuses India of
1. being a bully.
2. controlling their government
3. taking away their local business
4. not being concerned about nepal security interest

Bangladesh(lots of anti-indian people in this forum):
Accuses India of
1. being a bully
2. economic non-cooperation
3. killing innocent civilian in the borders
4. not being generous and often taking advantage of BD without giving anything in return

Sri Lanka(currently they are quite satisfied i guess)
accuses India of
1. fishermen war
2. tamils separatist supporter at one time
3. not investing enough

Pakistan:
Far too twisted and long to be elaborated upon.

China:
very Complex relation where we are competitors at international arena and some bilateral dispute.

Maldives Bhutan and Myanmar are the only one who have no problem with India though some western countries accuses India of not dealing toughly with the military junta regime in Burma.


I would like to ask you guys to discuss current relations India has with the neighbors except pakistan and china .

Questions to be discussed....
Where are we going wrong?
What do the people and their government want from India??
Our limitations??
Steps our govt. can take to satisfy them keeping in mind our national interest and security concerns?
Are these neighbours really want to have good relations with India or just they are looking at the investment from indian companies??

This is very well put.

I would like to add that quite like nothing grows in shade similarly no growth is without growth pangs.

It is not to do with India going wrong or right. India like any other nation ought to ( & does) look at its self interest - long & short term first always & everytime. It may or may not coincide with those of its neighbors. The bottom line being that divergence of views does not mean enmity .

If it is seen in any other way - so be it. Progress of a nation cannot stop due to such issues.

Like we are growing so are other nations in the vicinity which is good.In so doing they too will have views & opinions which is all right.

Quite frankly the Indian bureaucracy has to share the blame for a bit. Our policy towards our neighbors is not really with long term goals or visions, like when we lost the deal to upgrade SL ports was it? We lost to the Chinese cause our guys were trying to get every cent for the deal, which is not that good in the larger picture.

1) If we show vision in our policy we can make a more trustworthy partner than China or Pak can ever be because of the nature of our country.

2)We must learn to mind our business in countries like SL and Nepal, in SL we must protest for the rights of the minority but not press them. In Nepal we must have the stomach to tolerate a Govt that's not pro India for the short term if needed. We must understand they are in a similar position that we are in with America and Russia, we don't want to choose a side too strongly and that is, frankly, OK.

3) Frankly the Indian story of growth is one that is a stabilizing force in the region and is looked upon more favorably than the Chinese model, not that all the countries cant learn from the Chinese and vice-versa. As all countries in the region, including Pakistan, if they can muster the political will, will try to emulate India in some capacity we must help them as much as we can.

This has happened constantly and consistently throughout history.

Remember that Japan was very friendly towards China during the 70's-80's. Because we were weak back then.

Now we are growing stronger and they are getting worried, even though no one in their right mind thinks that it would be a good idea for China to invade Japan.

Increasing strength brings enemies.

Nepal, Bangladesh and Srilanka are democracy in initial stage & in democracy it is healthy practice to blame others for your failures so that public anger can be diverted.

Dear mate,when u grow stronger and ur military expands have contacts with other powers,naturally u get envy from ur neighbours..
Don't worry about Buthan,nepal,Sri lanka,bangladesh....There are some small problems that will be resolved...

We cannot stop growing because our neighbour's don't like it....!!!!

[PRACTICAL PATRIOT]

The only problem is each country looks for its own interests,
INDIA looks for its best interest and others look for their best interests.
you cant satisfy interest of everyone.
eg. if you help NEPAL with security matters then they will say that INDIA is bully and if you dont then they will complain INDIA is not helping wit security and such things
so whatever you do both the parties cannot be happy.
