Your post carries allot of merit, there's no disputing that but I believe the decay in Americans have began a long time ago, it's just now that it's been revealed to the surface in plain obvious sight.
I'll give you some examples of the recent American incompetence and corruption that's deeply entrenched into the society. During the 2008 Global Financial Crises when the millions of average Joe in US had their homes foreclosed because he had lost his job, unable make the ends meet and the repayments for his home; banks, lending and financial institutions CEO's had received bonuses in the ridiculous sums such as hundreds of millions of dollars when it was the banks and lending institutions fault driving the market to the ground and people losing the roof over their heads.
Lockeed Martin's F-35 had a budget blowout in the hundreds of billions of dollars and the entire project received lengthy delays. There were even talks about how the entire project from inception to first assembly roll-out had amounted to almost $1 trillion dollars making it the most expensive American military project to date. The company (Lockheed Martin) had been milking the tax payers one hand out after another...
GM (General Motors) was one the largest Automobile producer in the world and now it's hovering between 2nd or 3rd, was bankrupt and had to be bailed out by the government. They received billions of loans from the government to ensure they don't cease operations and put the company up for foreign sale. They now produce mediocre cars with questionable quality, gone are the days were Cadillac was seen as an American prestige cars for the American people. People now prefer Japanese cars since they have been proven to be of high quality with long endurance. They now have Tesla which is said to revolutionise the American automotive industry but yet, these cars are out of reach for most American consumers.
Cities like Los Angeles are on the verge of bankruptcy since they don't have much of an economic activity.
These are just some of the very few examples on top of my head. By the same token, Americans can also be innovative since they have a large population, such examples are the internet, google, facebook. In terms of IT they can come up with some creative stuff but other than that they don't much going for them.
American's have lost their moral compass many decades ago. With the collapse of the soviet union they began to behave like a spoiled child that can run a muck and no one could ask them: "Hey, what are you doing". That's why rivalry is necessary because if you leave the field to one single power, they will abuse their power and try to get away with it.
US is in debt up to $20 trillion dollars and China has taken some portion of that debt as bonds, so essentially Americans owe the Chinese. But if you ask our resident 'Murican @Deliorman everything is all roses and flowers in the land of the free.
Americans have also accumulated that vast military weapons arsenal in their prime from 70's to the 90's, now they only have couple hundred F-22 since they're unable to afford more.
