Each loco has diesel in the tanks you can see underneath the chassis:

Each engine(s) on board extract from the fuel on the tanks onboard the loco the engine is located on....precise variation of this at any given moment depends on what power is being employed from that diesel engine in the overall train (if its joined to other locos)....which depends on the larger traction/power situation that is needed/predicted.
