Yeah either way you can call . Thevars belongs to martial race and they are rulers of ancient Tamilnadu but I don't want 2 go into that , just see recent examples.

We were zamidars/palayakars during british regime. But traditionally farming is not our work.

Tevars, Nadars, Gounders and Mudaliyars have a similar lifestyle and business activities down south right?

Turkish Danishmand? Persian Danishmand I know; first time I've heard of Turkish Danishmand. Are there any Turkish Shias?

The Persian Danishmand means a learned person. It means the same in Urdu as well. There is probably a town known as Danishmand in India someplace and probably may even be a clan, I am not sure though.

The Danishment Dynasty, ruled central Turkey form around 1070 - 1170 AD. The daughter of Emir Danishment as the ruler was called, married the Caliph as well. These people along with troops of the Caliph defeated the second crusade. After 100 year's rule their area was amalgamated with Caliph's territories.

There are many Danisment people living in Turkey even today and many towns are also known as Danishment. At a certain stage during the accession of Emir, the second son of Emir Danishment left for Hindistan as the Turks call India even today. The prince with his entourage of Danishment royalty initially settled in Afghanistan - a district of Kabul even today is known as Danishment District in UN papers.

Then these people migrated to Kanikurram, where one of them later became famous as the Pir e Roshan. And from there some went to Punjab and established the first of 12 Pathan Bastis near Jullundhar, called Basti Danishmandan. At the time of partition all shifted to Pakistan.

Added later: There are Turkish Shias but their number is rather limited.

'Spirit' as in liquor?? Shetty's are more into the restaurant business and mafia, Chettiar's are spread from TN to AP, to Karnataka, they are industrialists than typical baniyas in the north. Most of my sect is into textiles and machinery manufacturing.

Yes...In Malayalam films spirit is always bought from a Shetty in Karnataka.

Also don't know whether you are aware that the UAE exchange (money transfer) in UAE is run by a Shetty making him the 2nd or 3rd richest Indian in UAE and he owns flats in Burj Khalifa.

Hey man then Suniel Shetty must be your distant relative. In Andhra also they are present but called setty as it means "trader" in telugu. Must be corruption of seth in hindi.

Hey u are the baniya Pakistani's always call all the Indians as man :P

Suneil Shetty AFAIK is a Bunt. The Bunts use the Shetty surname too, but they are very Nair-ish, land-holders and soldiers.

Can you please share any info on the origins of Nairs.

I've usually never been interested in my caste or by extension my ethnicity but this talk spanning so many pages has gotten me curious ! So Mr. Shearer please tell me something about the 'Buttts' !

You won't like this. You are probably converted Brahmins.

Except Brahmins, the other varnas are not that well defined in Tamil Nadu...I honestly think Thevars (not Devars) come under the same category as Kounders....Landowners/farmers.

Well, yes, and more.

Personally, after poring through a lot of anthropological stuff (terribly badly written garbage, but the facts were fascinating), I believe that except for Smarthas and Sri Vaishnavites, most people in Tamil Nadu belong to tribes that were absorbed as castes at the time of the sanskritisation of Tamil Nadu. Look at the tight geographical concentration of most of them. Also the replication of the land-owning caste over and over again.

Like I said thats exactly what the Grandpa told me ! Butttts were originally Baats or Bhaats who were Brahmins but somewhere along the way someone decided to converting to Islam and thats where the name Buttt took root to either distinguish the converts from the others by the converts themselves or by the others to distinguish the converts from themselves. Either way the name sort of stuck and voila the Butttss were born; of course if they had access to an English Dictionary they'd think a million times before naming themselves as such ! :woot:

P.S Why wouldn't I like this ! I've always maintained that I'm a part of this land...a different part but a part nonetheless ! But between you and I, I'd prefer if it were the Dalits instead of the Brahmins...I'm a massive fan of Ambedkar !

You are a ball less aunty and want to become an uncle. Remain an aunty as you will never be able to grow balls.

Now shut up and Bugger off.

Is Jarha a lady ? :what:

*flirt mode on* :woot:

Everybody having different life style. Nadars and Mudaliyaar are gud at business in TN ,among the 4 nadars belongs to lower caste category I mean previously they were SC now OBC.

 Yeah one could say that, But Chettiars are more diverse than the Northern Baniyas - there's 27 different sects in Chettiars depending on the Business they are known for right from gold smiths to educationists - colleges and schools - Chettiars are known for building lots of colleges down south. Shetty or Shettar is the coastal representatives of Chettiars.

You may be thinking about Nattukottai Chettiars. They are not the same.
