West Papua 'becoming a hunting ground' as Indonesian forces open fire on student protesters

Need to hear Papuan real voice not only one side.

This is what the Governor said regarding the so called student who want a referendum :

Governor: Papua is an integral Part of the Republic of Indonesia and it is final.

Papua Governor Lukas Enembe, reaffirmed that Papua Province is an integral part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). Thus, it is useless if students continue to struggle with their ideals to push for a referendum.

Therefore, he appealed to exodus students all over the land of Cenderawasih, so that they no longer dream of talking about a referendum on this land.

"Students who returning to Papua talk about independence are useless. Our country is clear, it is clear (Papua is part of Indonesia). The problem is over, don't be a victim because your hope and dream of talking about independence.

"(Papua is part of the Republic of Indonesia) is final,"
he said in a statement on Monday (23/9/2019), at the State Building, Jayapura.

On that occasion, Lukas hoped that the exodus students could return to their respective study cities and no longer insist on demanding a referendum. Because security guarantees for college have been conveyed by all regional heads and leaders of TNI / Polri.

"Even the Papua Provincial Government prepares transportation for students who will return to the city of study," he said.

Previously, Governor Enembe asked students from the land of Cenderawasih who conducted exodus from various study cities to immediately stop the action to disturb security and regional order.

"I ask the exodus students to stop all activities that disturb the stability and security of the people in Papua".

“Don't come here to disturb the security and order of the Papuan people with certain jargon. That is not allowed, "he said.

What things still need to be improved in Papua in your opinion?

Same things with other areas in Indonesia, living standard, health issue, education, etc. After all Indonesia is still a developing country, many to improve. Papua in particular is still very lack in infrastructure that hampering their development.

If Papua decide to leave Indonesia, what will Indonesian do?

I guess the same as what China would do if HK or Xianjiang decided to leave.

A young man has been severely beaten and a dozen other students injured after Indonesian security forces opened fire on a university rally in the Papuan capital, Jayapura.
Months of fresh demonstrations have gripped the region as thousands of Indigenous West Papuans renew calls for an independence referendum amid a deadly crackdown in the Indonesian-ruled provinces.
Some 13 university students were injured in Jayapura on Tuesday, with victims and witnesses claiming Indonesian troops opened fire to disperse a peaceful rally of about 20 people.

The history behind Papua's resurgent political turmoil

Benny Wenda, from the Liberation Movement of West Papua, said Indonesia was imposing martial law.
"These were live rounds,” Mr Wenda said. “West Papua is becoming more of a hunting ground by special forces.”
Indonesia’s control of the provinces has long been a cause of tension among Indigenous locals with low-level conflict and independence movements simmering for decades.
Despite a heavy military presence in the region and the threat of COVID-19, demonstrations calling for an independence referendum reignited in July.
It came after hundreds of thousands rallied in August and September of 2019, only to be silenced by a flood of more armed troops.

The mounting death toll of West Papua’s latest escalation in violence has seen Australia being pressured to take a stronger stance.

Australia urged to take stronger stance on curbing West Papua bloodshed

It’s estimated up to 70,000 people have been displaced and 250 killed in the past two years of violence.
Victor Yeimo from the West Papua National Committee said action would continue.
“Our message is very clear, West Papuan people need a political solution,” Mr Yeimo said. “We're calling on our Melanesian and Pacific leaders to upgrade its resolution to get the people of West Papua free from the colony of power.”
For West Papuan refugees who fled to Papua New Guinea in the 1970s, there's still hope they will one day be able to return.
“We will stay in PNG for the rest of our life, or if West Papua independence is decided, we go back to our home,” said Olof Wayabgkau, who fled Jayapura in 1975.

Congratulations in advance, you will get a new country soon, and yeah, this time again, it will be Australia that will jump first.

If the QUAD subdue China it will be unipolar world centered on US, no status quo as you think. It will be like 18th or 19th centuries where the major powers are western nations.
The very essence of deterrence is the ability to convince your enemy that if they start any war of sort to change the status quo, they'll end up wiped out.

Cheerleading squad were always plenty abundance if you have 20 % plus of unemployment rate that caused over security problems by their own making . And the funny thing is while some over informed and half educated lost soul highlanders was loudly chanting the OPM slogan and mantras ( and shamelessly requested/begged to be escorted home by the security apparatus they are protesting about . Because those highlanders are afraid over the reprisal from their brethren coastal tribes over their wanton destruction act during their so called " peacefull protestation " . Imagine that !! They more afraid to their brethen angers over the notorious Indonesian polices and security apparatus ) . the coastal area was in the economic thriving mode and get mass converted to islam without goverment involvement at all . Purely by their own spiritual realization and admission . No wonder some midle kingdom agents get the heated response because of it since it wouldn't be fit to narratives they are trying to sell

What a highlight of civillization .... :drag:

Now it's your turn to prove China has a hand in asking west papua for independent from Indonesia. I always back my words with fact. And not like some clown who spew rubbish and fake news only. :enjoy:

I said "if China has a hand in this". I already know who has hands in this. Putting China in my posts is just to mess with monkeys like you.

Democracy don't work this way. Comprehensive Papuan opinions matter. What governor says is like typical totalitarians. We know this is a dilemma for Indonesia, it's hard. Except for using force to control the area, you have no better ways. Papua don't share the values, culture, even history with Java. Indonesia also can't provde benefits, public products like living standard, health issue, education, etc. By the way, as you mentioned HK and Xinjiang, obviously they are at much higher level than Papua. HK or Xinjiang seek to reform the country but the majority don't agree with them. Anyway, they calm down now and someone try to integrate the majority's life as well.

Don't forget Puapa is island, it's open to all forces. The more eagerly you want to sovle it, the harder they resist, finally like timor you use forces, with a threat of external military hit at any time. You can't enjoy democracy in Java but runs dictatorship in Papua.

China has had hundreds of years trying to integrate minority ethnics regardless various measures. Give Indonesia a hundred years, this thing will go down the drain.

and you keep using words like dictatorship etc. What part of Indonesian rule nowadays that represent dictatorship? I get it you dont know democracy that well since where you came from, people got crushed under tanks asking for a democratic government, but before you use that big words, try to break down your argument first.

Nobody will give you a hundred year. You are clear what means protestershot by police.

Protestors or rioters/looters? You need to be really specific when talking about this issue. There are more than just one occasion of protests, by your logic there would not be any papuans left if protesting is what got them shot. Try again.

and you seem to confuse between democracy and self determination. Try to be consistent next time you wanna talk about this issue.

That's what we know clearly from the report. You guys just brush youself as democracy for foreign affairs purpose.

That's what we know clearly from the report.
know from A report. You are just bringing up reports from one side of two conflicting parties, it doesnt qualify as THE report. I am not sure what your aim is here, but to have a healthy discussion, you gotta bring reports from all possible sides to arrive at a conclusion
