West Indies captain Darren Sammy took five of the seven Pakistan wickets needed on day four as his side wrapped up a 40-run victory in the first Test in Guyana shortly after lunch.

Beginning Sunday on 80-3 chasing 219 to win, Pakistan suffered an immediate setback as Asad Shafiq was bowled by Ravi Rampaul (4-48) for 42.

Sammy then ended a dogged 52-run stand between Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal.

The lbw decision he won against Misbah was one of a record 20 in the match.

Never in Test cricket had so many batsmen been dismissed in that way, testament to the low bounce and exaggerated movement provided by the Providence wicket.

Two balls after removing captain Misbah for 52, Sammy followed up by sending back debutant wicketkeeper Mohammad Salman for a two-ball duck, and at lunch Pakistan were in trouble on 153-6, still 66 runs from victory.

The seventh wicket fell for the addition of a further seven runs, Abdur Rehman edging Rampaul to the slips.

Pakistan's lower order were unable to provide a twist in the tail, with Sammy winning his third lbw verdict of the day against Umar Gul and a fourth to end the 102-ball innings of Akmal, who hit 47.

A couple of overs later Sammy provided the final blow - crashing a ball into Saeed Ajmal's stumps.

The St Lucian all-rounder also picked up the man-of-the-match award, and said: "It's a good feeling. We needed this performance, it was a total team effort and it was good to come out with a win.

"Lately things haven't been going well but I still have the belief and the rest of the team also have belief. It is still only one victory, we still have to continue working hard and improving."

Misbah added: "To lose the Test is disappointing, but I think they played better cricket than us. They bowled disciplined lines.

"We dropped so many catches and gave away so many runs to the lower order, and it was a little disappointing from the batting view also."

Ahem To All Haters are you celebrating WI winning or Pakistan Lost ? :O

Look at my avtaar this for all those haters ;)

With all due respect to west-indies, pakistan looks a lot more formidable side....I am surprised at this loss...Pak needs to introspect a bit more...

Wow... Congrats to West indies.. team with out pollard, Gayle, and few main bowlers have did it..

i thought it was a easy game for Pakistan ..

20 batsmen in 2 innings scored just over 300.. Brilliant.

Pollard is T20 specialist so no chance of him being selected for tests, Chanderpaul and Sarwan are playing. Only Gayle is missing. And Bishoo is a main bowler for West Indies togather with Ravi Rampaul and Sammy. BTW congrats West Indies.

Sarwan and Chanderpaul were playing.

If only Pakistan's batting lineup was strong. The bowling was there with Ajmal getting fantastic 11 wickets. Would have made a difference with Fawad Alam, Adnan Akmal, Khurram Manzoor and Mohammad Yousuf but the Pakistani team is not complete without Khalifagiri and regional bias.

Congratulation West Indies. They won a test after 17 matches.

A team playing with Gayle , Bravo and Pollard doing great.
