Well played, but don't compare 'strikes and match': Asif Ghafoor replies to Indian home minister
June 17, 2019

"If in doubt please see results of our Nowshera counter strikes and response to IAF [Indian Air Force] violation on 27 Feb 19 downing two Indian jets," said Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor on Twitter. — ISPR/File

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor on Monday responded to Indian Home Minister Amit Shah's congratulatory message to the Indian cricket team after their win over Pakistan in the World Cup clash, in which he said: "Another strike on Pakistan by Team India and the result is same."

"Congratulations to the entire team for this superb performance. Every Indian is feeling proud and celebrating this impressive win," said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president on Twitter on Sunday.

Shah was referring to the aerial combat between the two neighbouring countries in February, which happened after Indian aircraft on Feb 26 carried out an airstrike on what it alleged was a “terrorist training camp” in Pakistan.

Doubt has been cast over the success of India’s airstrike, which Shah had claimed killed 250 — a figure that the Indian Air Force distanced itself from.

Pakistan had denied that there was any damage or casualties. Independent reporting by multiple local and international outlets who visited the site also found no evidence of a terrorist training camp or of any infrastructure damage.

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, via his personal account, on Monday responded to Shah, saying: "Dear Amit Shah, yes your team won a match. Well played."

Ghafoor, who is the director general of the Army's media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), pointed out that "two things with different denominators can’t be compared, so are strikes and match".

"If in doubt please see results of our Nowshera counter strikes and response to IAF [Indian Air Force] violation on 27 Feb 19 downing two Indian jets," he said, ending his tweet with: "Stay Surprised."

Following India's airstrike on Feb 26, the DG ISPR had held a press conference on the same day to debunk India's claims on the Line of Control (LoC) violation. "Today, the prime minister has asked everyone to get ready for every eventuality. We are all ready. Now it is time for India to wait for our response," he had asserted.

"I said that we will surprise you. Wait for that surprise," he had added. The following day, Pakistan Air Force had announced that its jets had flown into occupied Kashmir to demonstrate its capability to respond to Indian aggression, locked on to military targets, and then spared them.

It had later shot down two Indian aircraft inside Pakistani airspace when they tried to give chase to Pakistani jets, capturing an Indian pilot, Abhinandan Varthaman. The IAF pilot was released by Prime Minister Imran Khan as a "peace gesture".

Essentially, Pakistani army is controlling foreign portfolio when it comes to issues with India. Why is professional army calling out a simple off the cuff remark. Are you that insecure?

Have anyone ever seen indian army reacting to anything on twitter?

An unarmed politician doesn't quite get the point across the same way as someone who could barrage Delhi with missiles at a moment's notice does.

Illogical justification.

So DG ISPR could launch missiles at a moment's notice without even consulting elected politicians. If no, think before answering. If yes, I would worry about your country's security.

Firstly our politicians give a damn about India, neither India bashing is their political slogan nor they involve India in each and ever matter. However, Indian politicians can't sleep until they involve Pakistan or bash Pakistan. Moreover.,he is not an ordinary figure but the interior/home minister of state of India and DG ISPR has replied in its personal capacity and not from official account. Learn to live with it

I can definitely live with it. May be your politicians must give a damn about India considering how much adulation that this DG ISPR is getting from the likes of you.

Just setting the facts straight. Also, India Army tried to host a presser but failed miserably so not surprised that India Army or any branch of military doesn't have a social media presence because they would essentially end up bitchslapping themsleves

PERSONAL is the "keyword" here. Learn to understand, he is doing it in his personal capacity and NOT as a military representative

So DG ISPR could launch missiles at a moment's notice without even consulting elected politicians.

He's a spoke person for the military, which could very easily do that. He himself holds a pretty senior position in the military, so I wouldn't be surprised if he could do the same too.

If yes, I would worry about your country's security.

Every military can do that lol, ours is nothing special.

They are not allowed to have a presser unless they get permission from defence ministry. Have you not seen this presser in Feb.

Fine. Even then he shouldn't, given he is still in active duty but I concede Pakistani army men enjoy special rights in Pakistan.

No military does a special presser without explicit permission from elected government. I believe you got accustomed to Pakistani military taking everything into their hands as and when they like it that you started to believe thats how things are done.

The Yeti tweet came after getting permission from the defence ministry?

Does yeti discovery carry a serious foreign policy implication, if yes, then they must have done so. Please for once use brains.

You are basically confirming his point. Pakistani politicians are useless if this guy could rain missiles on Delhi without their approval.
