We should have a standard system for Roman Urdu and place names in Pakistan

I don’t know if this is the right section to post in but I have a thought, we in Pakistan we don’t have a standard system for writing Urdu (and other regional languages like Punjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, Balochi and they should be given importance but that is another topic) in the English alphabet and I think we should develop one and it should be promoted and taught. It will not threaten the Urdu alphabet. Most of us write Urdu in English letters on mobile or internet but everyone has their own way of spelling, some are more correct, others are more conveninent. For example, China has a system called Pinyin that the government accepts and everybody uses. Children actualy learn that before they traditional Chinese characters. Maybe India and Pakistan together could develop a system that both can read and this would open a huge wealth of knowledge for both countries. To do the same for Pashto with Afghanistan and Pakistan is more complicated however.

We should decide whether it is Punjab or Panjab. The form ‘Punjab’ reflects colonial past whereas ‘Panjab’ is more native however in my view, ‘Panjaab’ is the most correct but nobody every uses this!

I think you stepped over the line. You started with a pre-written story about your community and you were raising your voice for the rights of your community etc but now you're directly attacking our language ...WTH.. and if this is your idea of contribution then you can fcuk off... we don't need this crap.

You claimed that you can't speak Urdu...only some of your native language and Pashto in addition to English..

You must have misread. I said I can’t speak Punjabi. From the start I said I speak Urdu and Pashto in my family. I also know English and Farsi

Our people never lie. Sometimes we are forced to hide due to persecution (taqiya) but we never tell lies outright. We are bound by honouring moral code of our ancestors who are great fakirs and very high behaviour is expected of us

You're an odd one in your community then because the nomads I have met so far are pretty good at Punjabi but they can hardly speak Urdu..and that too with very thick accent.

Perhaps you did missed the part when I said we are based in KPK and originally arrived from Afghanistan? My family were in Afghanistan from almost 200 years so naturally we forgot Punjabi! My grandmother could speak it and relatives in Punjab still can.

I mainly grew up in Pindi/Islamabad. Half of the local people in the areas where we lived were Punjabi and the other half were Pathan so we used Urdu with each other and in wider society and education. I was educated mostly by NGOs and was fortunate they introduced me to English from early on, it was almost on level on English medium private school or maybe even better because there were few students but dedicated teachers. Some teachers were not good but most were excellent and I am forever in their debt. I can understand Punjabi of course, I heard it every day. People would talk to me in Punjabi but I replied in Urdu and then they usually asked ‘aap Pathan ho’?

So I must say the ‘galiyan’ I know are in Punjabi lol and also in Pashto of course

Actually I know many Punjabi words but I don’t know the grammar of the language

I can try to speak it but it won’t be correct

Main tuwade nal Punjabi vich gal karan di koshish karsan tusi mainu sikhao main ko seekhne da vadda shauq ey kyun k assarde daaday is zaba vich gal karande si.

I actually would like to learn Punjabi and especially Saraiki

Besides our ancestors spoke Saraiki or Hindko dialect they called it ‘Inku’ and Jatki they didn’t called it Punjabi

I had to edit my attempt at Punjabi to make it more correct lol

There is a massive difference sure you can speak two langaugaes don’t have a problem with that however would u write English in Urdu as well???the start of a destruction of any culture starts by manipulating language

That is wrong against everything yes I can read Urdu..would u ask an Italian to write Italian in English sure once in a while is fine but to impose it???like I said if you want to change a culture you start with changing their language first

And what exactly are you proposing ?changing Urdu alphabet to English ala how the Turks did?? Don’t really understand what you are proposing here if that is what you are proposing I disagree with that other than that some of us do write Urdu in English??!
