We should have a standard system for Roman Urdu and place names in Pakistan

I don’t know if this is the right section to post in but I have a thought, we in Pakistan we don’t have a standard system for writing Urdu (and other regional languages like Punjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, Balochi and they should be given importance but that is another topic) in the English alphabet and I think we should develop one and it should be promoted and taught. It will not threaten the Urdu alphabet. Most of us write Urdu in English letters on mobile or internet but everyone has their own way of spelling, some are more correct, others are more conveninent. For example, China has a system called Pinyin that the government accepts and everybody uses. Children actualy learn that before they traditional Chinese characters. Maybe India and Pakistan together could develop a system that both can read and this would open a huge wealth of knowledge for both countries. To do the same for Pashto with Afghanistan and Pakistan is more complicated however.

We should decide whether it is Punjab or Panjab. The form ‘Punjab’ reflects colonial past whereas ‘Panjab’ is more native however in my view, ‘Panjaab’ is the most correct but nobody every uses this!

Why dont you write this post in Roman Urdu?

what language do they speak? i frequented the gypsies or Zigeuner during my european travel. they seem much more oppressed in europe than Pakistan

Urdu in its original form doesn't need any change or alteration. Roman style writing is the choice of people by adopting English words to write Urdu message.... Don't mind but most of the people doesn't even know how to write proper Urdu... Instead of bringing a new system to the already damaged/forgotten Urdu, time to introduce proper Urdu Keyboard for the hardware that people normally use... Create awareness about Urdu and that spelling change while writing Roman Urdu is not much of issue... Punjab can remain Punjab due to roman pronunciation of Urdu but the main issue, in my view, is the lack of knowledge about Urdu script. When it comes to original literature, I think writing Roman Urdu is disrespect & insult to the language itself.

Roman urdu is a compromise, not structure for the growth/progress for our language. Adopt this compromise and in 40 years youth wont be able to read standard Urdu alphabeta, and that means you will disconnect with your literature, history and National identity.

Its ok if there is a variation in spellings in Roman Urdu as this reflects dialect. But adopting a solution like EasyUrduTyping.com will be helpful as it can write same urdu from multiple roman spellings.

I dont think we should touch its script otherwise we will endup making it like Turkish
