Khaleda tells sit-in that agitation to start if EC fails Ctg city polls test; warns govt of dire consequences if it skips democratic path, cautions intelligences against 'oppression'; says no pardon for Fakhruddin, Moeen, few others

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday warned of launching a countrywide mass movement against the government from the polling day if any rigging occurs in the Chittagong City Corporation Election.

The CCC polls will be a real test for the Election Commission to prove its neutrality, said Khaleda, the leader of the opposition, at a mass sit-in organised by BNP on the premises of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital.

She said the government must get back to the path to democracy and follow the rule of law; otherwise it will face dire consequences.

"We won't tolerate any more oppression by the government. If attacked, we will retaliate," she said.

The former premier said they would have to go for tough programmes if the government does not change its attitude.

Khaleda warned the intelligence agencies and Bangladesh Television (BTV) about playing a partisan role.

She also criticised human rights organisation for keeping silent about the "repression on the opposition."

The mass sit-in, the first anti-government programme since the December 2008 election, was organised to protest against "the government's interference in judiciary" and "appointment of incompetent and controversial persons as justices."

BNP's alliance partner Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh Jatiya Party, Islami Oikya Jote and a number of like-minded political parties, professional bodies and personalities participated in the programme for the first time after January 2007.

Hundreds of supporters of the opposition took position on the road in front of the Engineers' Institution causing severe traffic congestion in the area.

They chanted anti-government slogans during the four-hour sit-in that began at 10:00am.

Loudspeakers and large screens had been installed at different points from Shahbagh to Kadamful Chattar.

Calling for the resignation of the election commission, the BNP chief said it created a rift in BNP during the tenure of the last caretaker government.

Khaleda said the overzealous members of intelligence agencies, who are arresting and torturing opposition activists, will face grave consequences for their partisan role.

"You [the members of intelligence agencies] may have to face remand one day. Be alert and careful," said the former prime minister.

She again came down hard on former chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed and former army chief Moeen U Ahmed.

The leader of the opposition said all [in the army] except Moeen, and a few others along with Fakhruddin, will be pardoned.

"I have no grievance against the army as only a few people including Moeen Uddin committed crimes. If you [army personnel] give deposition that Moeen and a few others had committed the offences, you will be pardoned."

Khaleda protested against the shutdown of Amar Desh and the arrest of its acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman.

Media houses are being shut for telling the truth, she said.

The BNP chairperson said if BNP is voted back to power, those sacked by the present government will get their jobs back while the "partisan cadres" being appointed now will lose their jobs.

"The government has taught us this lesson and we will follow it in future," she said.

The BNP chairperson said she placed a budget proposal for the good of the present government that termed it unconstitutional.

"The government is violating the constitution time and again," Khaleda alleged.

Referring to the 1986 elections, she asked, "Wasn't it a violation of the constitution when they convened parliament at the South Plaza of Sangsad Bhaban after losing the polls, stage-managed by the then military dictator HM Ershad?"

The leader of the opposition urged judges to maintain neutrality, saying they need not worry, as people will be with them if they ensure justice.

She said if voted to power again, they would set up a Supreme Court secretariat.

Khaleda alleged that BTV telecast "false" news about her and her sons.

"None will be able to protect those who are doing these against me and my sons."

Criticising human rights bodies, the former premier said they created uproar in Dinajpur over the murder of a girl when BNP was in power. But now they remain silent about the repression on the opposition by the ruling party.

"I want to know the reason behind their silence."

She demanded immediate release of Mahmudur Rahman, BNP leaders Lutfozzaman Babar, Abdus Salam Pintu and Nasiruddin Pintu.

Khaleda Zia called upon all to make the June 27 hartal a success.

She said the hartal was not called for the benefits of her party or herself but for bringing an end to people's sufferings.

BNP leaders Khandaker Delwar Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Shawkat Mahmud, Jamaat leaders Matiur Rahman Nizami and Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed, Andaleeve Rahman Partha of BJP, Shafiul Alam Prodhan of Jagpa, among others, spoke.

Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farrooque and Jubo Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal moderated the programme.

Brother, It's all about survival. If BNP and it's alliance does not stand against Awami league then you will not find any opposition any where near in few years. Khaleda Zia not only be homeless but also be country less.

Awami league is not interested in strong democracy because it's a fascist party by nature. I remind you BAKSAL.

Yes you do have a point. A country with no opposition will be stuck on a one way road. We need Khaleda in the country to balance out Hasina. Though, I personally dislike them immensely. Always bickering and taking politics to a personal level. Simply disgusting; I once read someone say that if Mujib and Zia saw what their daughter and wife respectively have lowered themselves to, they would turn in their graves, and I could not agree more. But that's just me, I think that there is better leadership in the country somewhere in all the political parties. But I also believe that both party have their good sides and bad sides as all things do, no one can deny that.

But how many of these parties think in terms of the national interest? Even the BNP and Jamaat think only of party interests. They are protesting for their survival but not national survival.

Out of all the parties that think only about their own interests, I think the religious based parties are the worst, hiding behind religion for personal gains, Jamaat especially if they are among these munaafiqoon. Not that non-religious based parties who are in politics for themselves are that much better, they are merely "less worse". But of course, only Allah knows what is in the hearts of men.

It has been fashion for Indo- Awami leaning mind to equate BNP with Awami League when Awami League shows its fascist character and fail miserably. This type of comparison only to hide Awami failure and indian dalali.

That is not to say BNP is the answer for all problems or in its current form holds supreme national interest in heart. BNP has fair share of failure but completely different in nature. BNP lacks leadership, vision, strategy and organization like Ziaur Rahman once provided. At least BNP provide the nationalistic platform where there are some room for change and betterment.

With current and foreseeable political options, BNP still present better than other alternatives like Awami League or like 1/11 regime. At leaset during BNP period economic and industrial progress was prominent and visible, GDP growth 6.7% in 2005-06. In comparison decrease of GDP in last 3 years.

BNP at least did not sell out the country to india for clinging into power in comparison Awami league regime selling our sovereignty and strategic standing too blatantly since assumed the power.

And anyone have been foolhardy expecting an indo-US backed third power (Moeen-Fakhrul regime) would provide relief from Awami League fascist-destructive power and BNP's lack of discipline and half hearted nationalism, then they have already tasted utter and expansive failure.

Bottom line when a growing young population can so easily be fooled by few "digital gimmick" ; can these very people really blame politicians for not trying?????

They can only fight for the national if they survive. Awami kept them on one feet so far and who would have thougt that BNP would be able to stand up again. I am happy to see greater alliance among Bangladeshi and Islamic nationalist forces. Begum Zia knows things or two. Let's see how she play the game. I am optimistic. :)

There is a diffrence between BNP and Awami leauge. If there are any patriot politicans in BD then that would be with BNP and right wing party whearas Awami leauge is full of Bharati Dalals. BNP is pro-Islam while Awami is anti-Islam. You can not deny this fact if you analyze their activity thus far. :coffee:

Whenever BNP comes to power they forget all their promises.

Yes, AL is Gobor, but BNP is Dhoa Tulshir Pata. Your comments do not reflect the reality of political people in BD. It may be acceptable if you would have said that Jamaat is quite better than both BNP and AL, although Jamaat role in 1971 was against the country. But, it is strange that you are talking in favour of BNP all the time as if you belong to it.

Sometimes I wonder why a declared Razaakar like you should always talk of BNP. BNP was not a Razaakar Party, still you always name it as if it is a Razaakar Party. I wonder what is your aim. Is it to publicise that BNP is full of Razaakars, when in reality its founder, President Zia, proclaimed the independence of BD? How it is possible that Razaakars can be members of BNP? It is off limit to you.

Are bhai. What is your problem calling me a Razakar all the time. Have I called you Bharati dalal directly because many times you sound like one? Keep attacking me.........:)

A cat may be white or may be black, it is no problem if it can catch mouse. So is true with all the political Parties, AL or BNP. BNP was good in its 1st term, but did many heinous things in the second term. The worst thing they did was to steal billions of dollars from the State coffer. The purpose was to use this money for vote buying. The voter list this Party had compiled had 10 million false voters.

AL was bad in its 1st term, but is doing better in the 2nd term. Begum Hasina was inept, calleous and good-for-nothing in that term. Without working for the country, her only job was to travel abroad and get doctorate degrees. She has bagged nine of it. But, this time she has changed a lot. At least, she knows where the problems are and what are the requirements for development. She has pinpointed shortage of power as number one enemy.

I am not sure if the present-day BNP has awakened from their sleep. In BD, all those old style jargons like Feni will become India and many others have no value now-a-days. People want employment , houses and other facilities. BNP should discard old style politics and adopt new development programs of its own so that the population accept them again.

BNP has many good politicians. The people who call themselves BNPwala in this Forum are, in reality, razaakar, and belong to Jamaat. But, they hide it in this Forum. They are like blind people. No light will ever enlighten them.

I don't believe that AL is ALL Bharati dalals just as I don't believe that BNP is duud-e-dhoa either. BNP is not pro-Islam, ZIA was pro-Islam. BNP today is an ally of Jamaat and claims to be pro-Islam because of it. I'm not trying to bash BNP by the way. I'm just saying they're not really what they say they are. AL on the other hand, is very pro-India, and we can all see that. They rely a lot on India, put their trust in India, prove to be loyal to India to some degree too by handing over anti-Indian criminals. But at the moment, I don't see much harm in it (feel free to prove me wrong if you can without bashing me). ;) But I do hope to see India reciprocate with the extradition of criminals soon.

One more point about India:
Yes, there have been times when India has not come through for us.
Yes, they are friends with Israel.
But, we are surrounded by them, not having a good relation with them would be just dumb. While also strengthening ourselves, maintaining our national interests and sovereignty at the same time of course. The same should be about Pakistan, we should also build and maintain a good relation with them (a direct shoutout to AL), clinging to the past will get us nowhere.
Sorry for going off topic, just wanted to make some things clear.
