Local tech company Walton has started manufacturing protective equipment including face shields and safety goggles for the first time in the country to ensure the safety of doctors and healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic.
They have already manufactured 1,000 face shields and safety goggles and handed those over to the Directorate General of Health Services on Saturday for free, said officials of Walton today.
"This is the first initiative of manufacturing face shields and safety goggles in the country," Golam Murshed, executive director of Walton, told The Daily Star.
He said several garment factories were making protective suits, masks, gloves, shoe-covers and head-covers as personal protective equipment (PPE), but goggles and face shields were the difficult ones to make and on one moved to produce them locally yet.
"With the goggles and face shields, now the PPE manufacturing gets a complete shape in Bangladesh," Murshed said, adding, "Now Bangladesh can consider exporting PPE to other countries."
Earlier, Walton took permission from the DGHS for manufacturing face shields and safety goggles.
They are also engaged with Medtronic, an international medical device manufacturing company, to go for local manufacturing of the medical equipment.
With the support of State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Walton has received the patent, design and source code of ventilators from Medtronic on March 31, Walton officials said.
