Star Online Report

Local tech company Walton has started manufacturing protective equipment including face shields and safety goggles for the first time in the country to ensure the safety of doctors and healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

They have already manufactured 1,000 face shields and safety goggles and handed those over to the Directorate General of Health Services on Saturday for free, said officials of Walton today.

"This is the first initiative of manufacturing face shields and safety goggles in the country," Golam Murshed, executive director of Walton, told The Daily Star.

He said several garment factories were making protective suits, masks, gloves, shoe-covers and head-covers as personal protective equipment (PPE), but goggles and face shields were the difficult ones to make and on one moved to produce them locally yet.

"With the goggles and face shields, now the PPE manufacturing gets a complete shape in Bangladesh," Murshed said, adding, "Now Bangladesh can consider exporting PPE to other countries."

Earlier, Walton took permission from the DGHS for manufacturing face shields and safety goggles.

They are also engaged with Medtronic, an international medical device manufacturing company, to go for local manufacturing of the medical equipment.

With the support of State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Walton has received the patent, design and source code of ventilators from Medtronic on March 31, Walton officials said.

Brilliant, now BD can manufacture and will be able to export all Covid-19 medical supplies apart from ventilators.

@dbc - US order will soon be fulfilled.

It is so cool of Medtronic to open source their ventilator design and source code so companies like Walton can mass produce royalty free.

Walton reminds me of Walton on Thames, I went there often, my rowing team still miss me and I miss them!

What a brilliant humanitarian gesture by this US company.

walton made ventilator has been handed over to authorities for clinical trial

Yep and just a few days ago there were the usual miserable posters saying where was Walton in terms of coming out with ventilators?.
Butt-hurt losers whose corrupt and incompetent party BNP has been forever banished from the politics of BD will be even more miserable now.

Back on topic - it looks like BD will have no real need for huge amounts of ventilators as the need just does not seem it will materialise, but always best to be ready in case there is.

It is excellent that Walton learnt a lot about ventilators by producing the Medtronic design but of course it cannot produce this outside the pandemic and definitely cannot export to other countries.

Walton would have taken this knowledge and experience to have built it's two own designs and so these can be the basis of Walton becoming one of the home suppliers of ventilators for the future.
