Isn't its a little late to ask for advice :D well Istanbul is huge you need guidance to explore it, are you going to visit Rhodes and Greece with sea way ? if so you can visit some touristic/historical sites in Aegean coast.

What you want to see/experience? as i understand , you go for beach/sea/sun/night life. All of them are plenty there. first thing to do get on a boat to visit some places near Marmaris, and then get ready to burn in day and cool off at nights in bars, my advice be very friendly and proactive to enjoy your vacation, otherwise you just take pictures.

The city of Çanakkale for sure if you love WWI. And don't forget to pay a visit to Princess Islands (Heybeliada especially) in Istanbul where the glorious Naval Cadet School is located :D

.
Go have a beer or two in Beyoglu. The roof top bars are amazing.
Do the small Bosphorus tour if you can.

It basically depends on how long you're going to stand and how much you're willing to spend.

Begin with Hagia Sophia, then Blue mosque for sure , move to Suleymaniye mosque its a good one too, take a look on topkapi palace, move down to eminonu from Gulhane parki , ah anyway :D ,eat some kurufasulye around suleymaniye , also there is a boza seller, near mosque named " vefa boza" , you can take locations on Maps i guess :D
after down to sirkeci coast from gulhane parki, you may choose to go down marmaray to pass uskudar, or just walk to eminonu , have fish -bread ( that is imported from norway) :D :D
actually there are so many historical places around , these are most basic ones you can see.
after walking to eminonu, get moving to karakoy , by passing galata bridge , eat baklava in karakoy gulluoglu , get the tunnel ( its somewhere around there, 2nd metro in the world ) that moves you beyoglu ,istiklal street . Walk along there, look on sides streets (nevizade,or beers streets )
there are some museums if you want to take a look ,one is in topkapi palace, other one is Rahmi Koc museum that had plenty of stuff, from old fashion cars,to planes (there is one crashed ,and taken from mediterrenean), trains , one ferry and one submarine :D,
also grand bazaar ,is the one example of itself that u can see in the world :D

after istanbul, could go to canakkale by a bus , pass to asian side ( or can choose to be on europe side, to see places of dardanelles campaign that takes one day to see ) on asian side, take some walk on coast , see troia horse that is used on movie ,and then go to troia city ( if you want to see ) then move down to izmir ( by passing ayvalik and some summer time villages of aegean coast)

cool :-)

Gaziantep has the location where Hazrat Ibrahim [ Abraham ] was tried to be burnt alive by Nebuchdenezzer [ correct me please ]

Mardin is ancient Assyrian land, while Van has ancient Armenian Churches.

Back Sea Coast east of Trabzon has the Pontic Greek Civilization and seems like a world on its own.

Konya in Anatolia has Hazrat Jalaluddin Roomi resting site, a marvel.

Antioch is an ancient city in the south, a strange valley indeed, must be seen

Adana has the biggest Mosque in Turkey

I already been to all of those places last year, so were I would go would be different where you want to go  .. Personally I would go to west-east coast and hang around near the sea, have drinks, baklava, grill and night life. :D You have to be more specific. Are you a person interested in historical places or more touristic places and how many days are you staying?

Just came back from Turkey recently (from Dalaman airport). I really enjoyed my stay in Mamara and the Aegean region. It's an very mountainous country with so much greenery. Turks seemed to be more hospitable than I thought and didn't mind mingling with the tourist, complete opposite of most places I visited in S. Europe like Southern France, Spain, Malta etc (they seem hostile to me :D). I had an boat ride to Rhodes Island where an massive siege had taken place against the Knight Order (under Sulimen?) and enjoyed fresh fish in my boat trip. I then preceded to Ephesus (the highway trip was, erm bumpy and hilly :P). The tour guide talked about how an Greek General managed to almost the Roman republic originated in the region, and it was once the 3rd largest city in the Roman Empire and Mary of Nezerth lived here. Overall, I enjoyed the trip and wish to go there again (saw an TN Frigate at the sea front in Marmara). But some of our fellow British tourist were quite rude (but most were good tourist).

I'm glad you had a pleasant experience :) Skiing is also pretty awesome in Turkey, I was at Kartalkaya march 2014, but would recommend earlier in the season so you have plenty of snow.
